Services will be 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 5, at the First Presbyterian Church in St. Paul. Pastor Tony Coffman will be officiating. PAUL — Wesley “Wes” E. Stevens, 80, of St. Paul died Monday, July 1, 2019, at the Howard County Medical Center in St. Paul. Wes was born at home on the farm northeast of Cotesfield on February 17, 1939, to George and Julia (Conger) Stevens. He attended District 5 cchool through the seventh grade. His father passed away in 1946. In 1951, his mother and sisters moved to St. Paul. Wes graduated from St. Paul High School in 1956. He attended college for three semesters before enlisting in the U.S Army in 1958, serving in United States and Germany. In 1961, Wes was honorably discharged. He settled in Hastings, and worked as a photographer for several years. He also worked as a projectionist at theaters in Grand Island and Hastings. He graduated from the Grand Island School of Business in 1966. He worked at Hastings Industries for two years before moving to Florida for seven years working for an oil distributor and driving a truck. He returned to Nebraska in 1975, when he worked as a crop insurance adjustor for 11 years. He then finished working several years for his sister and brother-in-law in their auto parts store in Loup City before he started his many years of volunteering. In 1986, he completed his bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska in Kearney. In 1994, Wes was certified as a Lay Pastor and served a small church in Rockville until 2010. He never married. He was a faithful and helpful member of the First Presbyterian Church in St. Paul. Wes officially retired in 2003. His many volunteering opportunities started in 2004, with volunteering at Head Start in St. Paul, the Medical Clinic and as a teammate mentor, and was a past president of the Howard County Chapter of Teammates. Wes continued more volunteering by adding the Senior Center to his list: in 2011, he delivered meals in town three days a week. He also enjoyed the interaction with people and when he delivered meals, he always made sure they were alright when he gave them their lunches. He loved to tell jokes, always a different one every day. He was also a great chocolate chip cookie baker and will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor! He will be missed by the many friends and his relatives. He is survived by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Myrtle Baird of Costa Mesa, Calif., Linda and Ron Pincheon of Gladwin, Mich., and Ruth and Larry Farmer of Ord; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Wesley was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Julia A. Stevens; and one brother-in-law, Henry C. Baird.
