Read More	W. Gale Mullen June 6, 1925 - May 10, 2017 W. Gale Mullen, 91, of Erie, passed away at 6:15 a.m., Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at the Prairie Mission Retirement Village in St. Paul. He was born June 6, 1925 in rural McCune, the son of John and Margaret (Upton) Mullen. He grew up on the family farm near McCune and graduated from McCune High School in 1942. Because farming was considered essential to the war effort he had a 2C deferment but he wrote the draft board requesting his classification be changed to 1A and offering to enlist for 24 months if they would put him in the Navy. In June 1944 he reported to the Great Lakes Naval Training Center where he was trained as a signalman and was ultimately assigned to a Navy Armed Guard unit aboard the merchant ship the SS Santiago Iglesias. He was discharged in 1946 and started college at Pittsburg State College on the G.I. Bill. In 1948 he married Raeme Lee Wamsley, of McCune, and they moved to Manhattan where he graduated from Kansas State University in 1950 with a degree in agronomy. Gale and Raeme Lee moved with their daughter Debra to Russell where he accepted a position as a 4-H Agent and then became the County Agent. Their family grew with the births of Sharman and Bruce. In 1957 they moved to Coffeyville where Joretta was born. Later that year he accepted a position as County Agent for Neosho County and they moved to Erie. He was later offered a position as Kansas Farm Management Association Fieldman and from 1961 to 1982 he helped farmers manage their operations and prepared their tax returns. After retiring from Farm Management he and Raeme Lee formed Mullen Farm Business Services, Inc., continuing to work with farmers while also partnering with Lew and Marjane Wamsley in developing the Pinederosa Christmas Tree Farm near Strauss. From 1998 through 2000 they phased out of their businesses. Gale established many lasting friendships including the Pinochle Club that met in each other’s homes for nearly 50 years and the farmers who enjoyed traveling to Europe visiting farm operations among the other sites. Gale and Raeme Lee took multiple trips to Europe, Russia, South America and all of the states of the union. Gale was active in the Erie Christian Church serving as elder, Board chair and Sunday School teacher and was on the USD 101 Board of Educaton. He served on the Erie Library Board and several other civic groups and causes. Gale is survived by his wife of 68 years, Raeme Lee and by their children Debra (Randy) Clayton of Topeka, Bruce Mullen of Erie and Joretta (Larry) Stowe of Topeka; eleven grandchildren and step-grandchildren, Carrie (Casey) Guilfoyle, Alyssa (Chad) Boaz, Kyle Mullen, Alexa (Bryon) Cobb, Lyndee Trost, Ryan (Charlotte) Purcell, Eric Purcell, Nicholas (Tamara) Clayton, Tracey Stowe, Marti (Gordon) Landsford, Jason (Karly) Stowe and 14 great-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his parents, his brother Melvin, his daughter Sharman Blasing and daughter-in-law, Judy Mullen. The Celebration of Life service will be at 1 p.m., Monday, at the Erie Christian Church, with Rev. Michael Haggard officiating. Burial will follow in the McCune Cemetery with a flag presentation by the Erie American Legion. Gale will lie in state at the Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home after 1 p.m., Sunday, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the church or the Erie Library.
