Read More	1949 Feb 10, Spirit Lake Beacon, Pg.9, Spirit Lake, Iowa: WILBUR LIBBY PASSES AWAY ON FRIDAY: Arthur [sic] Libby, eldest son of Samuel Appleton and Angelina Libby, was born at Cascade, Dubuque county, on August 13, 1857 and passed away at his home near Arnolds Park, Iowa March 4, 1949, at the age of 91 years, six months and 19 days. At the age of 14, he was taken with a fever which lasted a long time and which left him with his hip out of its sockett [sic]. Two specialists from Dubuque consulted with the family doctor, but because of lack of knowledge at that time, this condition could not be corrected, and he spent the balance of his life suffering from this handicap. In spite of this, he worked on a farm as soon as he was grown. His motto was that no hired man was asked to do more than he did. He was the eldest of nine children. His father being a carpenter was away from home a great deal of the time and Wilbur was almost a father to the younger children. When Annette, the youngest girl was born, Wilbur was in a wheelchair, and she became his special charge while the mother was busy with the family housekeeping. He was converted so long ago that the time and place have been forgotten. He attended church as long as he was able, taking an active part in church activities. For many years he was Sunday School teacher and a member of the Ministry and Oversight Body of the Friends Church in Arnolds Park. In 1934 while on a trip to the Black Hills in South Dakota he contracted rheumatism. He was under the care of Dr. Brackney of Sheldon and later Dr. Ward of Arnolds Park, but he never recovered from this affliction. Loving hands did all that was possible to make him comfortable during these last years. Though, towards the last he did not suffer too much pain, he never complained and wished for the time when he could be at rest. His parents and three sisters, Evelyn, Florence and Rossie preceded him in death, as did one brother, who died when a boy. Those remaining of his beloved family are Eugene of Oregon, Mrs. Mable Phelps and Alvira [sic, Alvra] of South Dakota and Miss Annette of Arnolds Park. Services were held at the Friends church Monday afternoon with Rev. Paul Hadley of New Providence preaching the sermon. He was assisted in the services by Rev. Baitto, local pastor of the church. Pall bearers were Martin Heed, Jim Reed, Arthur Weise, Paul Mansmith, Kenneth Orrand, Glen Pugh. The church choir consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Mi Elston, Mrs. Margaret Watson and Arthur Weise, with Mrs. Baiotto at the piano, furnished music. Relatives and friends from out of town who were in attendance included Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Phelps, Union Grove, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Parks, Remsen, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Dempster, LeMars, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Lyons and family, Boone, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Simonsen and Mrs. Jeanette Morgan, Aurelia, Ia.; Harry DeBolt, Cherokee, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Elser, Mrs. Lloyd Baker and Rev. and Mrs. Paul Hadley, Pierson, Ia.; and Mrs. Bell E. Baker of Spirit Lake. Ladies of the Friends church served dinner for the Libby family and out-of-town friends Monday, and after the services, served ice cream, cake and coffee. 1949 Mar 17, The Milford Mail, P5, Milford, Iowa Wilbur Libby Rites Held at Park Funeral services for Wilbur Libby, long time Arnolds Park resident, were conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Friends church, with Rev. Paul Hadley former pastor, and Rev. Baiotto officiating. Mr. Libby died Friday evening at his home after several months of declining health. He had been bedfast the past two weeks. "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Face to Face" were sung by a quartet, Mr. and Mrs. Mi Elston, Mrs. Margaret Watson and Arthur Wiese, and casket bearers were Jim Reed, Jim Read, Arthur Wiese, Paul Mansmith, Kenneth Orr and Glen Pugh. Two specialists from Dubuque consulted with his own doctor but because of lack of knowledge concerning such things at that time, this condition could not be corrected and he spent the balance of his life with that handicap.
