Description	:	During the 1860's it became common for residents of the Klein Klonia-Tuchel area to emigrate to the United States. Between 1862-1871 and again in 1876-1886, 68 people of every 1000 inhabitants left the Tuchel area, the majority going to America. Only 1650 of these people left legally by getting permission from the Prussian government to leave. Families usually sent someone ahead to become familiar with the new place and get established so they could help the rest of the family come over later. Families usually sent someone ahead to become familiar with the new place and get established so they could help the rest of the family come over later. People sometimes followed friends or neighbors in the same fashion. In the case of the Knuths, Wilhelm and his family came first. They sailed from Bremen, Germany on board the Albert and arrived in New York on August 7, 1865. Those coming were Wilhelm Knuth, age 27, farmer, Justine Knuth, 30, Johann Knuth, 7, Hulda Knuth, 2, and Wilhelm Totz, 23, a miller. Wilhelm Totz was probably a brother to Justine. They settled in Chicago, Illinois. In 1868 some of the rest of the family followed. They came on the ship Weser and arrived in New York on July 25, 1868. this group consisted of Johann Knuth, 33, farmer, Elisabeth Knuth, 28, Mathias, 7 ( This is probably Mathilde, name and sex both incorrect on the ship's log), Augusta, 5, Henriette, 19, Johann Knuth 60, farmer and Anna Knuth 56. They also went to Chicago. On February 8, 1870, under the leadership of Carl Wulsten Johann Jr. and his family, Wilhelm and his family and Johann Sr. and Anna left Chicago to come to the Wet Mountain Valley with the Colfax Colony. They arrived in the middle of March of 1870. Johann Sr. and his wife Anna, both died the first year in the Wet Mountain Valley and were buried at Colfax, near what was later the site of the Colfax School. These graves can no longer be found but sometime before 1913 , Carl Wulsten showed them to William Knuth, a great-grandson of Johann and Anna. After WW II the Tuchel area of West Prussia became part of Poland. Tuchel became Tuchola and Klein Klonia became Mae Klonia. The Lutheran Church in Bagnitz was torn down and the tombstones in the cemetery in Klein Klonia were destroyed. Wet Mountain Tribune [Westcliffe, Custer, CO], October 20, 1911 Pioneer Crosses the Great Divide William Knuth passed away at his home in the valley on Tuesday evening last, the direct cause of death being attributed to apoplexy, aged 73 years, 8 months and 15 days. Deceased was numbered among the pioneers of the valley, he coming here with the colonists in 1870. He was a man who led the simple life of the farmer and by hard work amassed a considerable fortune. In fact, he has for many years been regarded as one of the most prosperous farmers in this section. He was always honest in his dealings and prompt to pay any obligation, a trait of character admired by all. He is survived by an aged widow and six children: Mesdames George Baker, Peter Koch, Louis Reuker, Joseph George [Georges] and Robert Eikelman, and one son Helmuth F. Knuth of the Westcliffe Hardware company here; also a brother John Knuth, residing in the valley and another brother in the east. Another son, John Knuth, died in the valley several years ago. The funeral was held from the home at 10 a.m. today, the service being held at the valley Lutheran church and conducted by the Rev. Carl Lange, after which the remains were followed to the Silver Cliff cemetery by a goodly concourse of friends of the family who witnessed the placing of the remains beneath the sod there. The sorrowing widow and family have the sincere sympathy of all in their hour of bereavement.
