Read More	The Emporia [KS] Gazette, 28 Sep 2017, Thursday Willard Frame Barber Jr. Willard Frame Barber Jr. (Bill), 96, died peacefully on September 25 at his home in Naples, Florida with his wife and daughter at his side. Bill developed his lifelong love for the outdoors, especially golf and fishing, and for his first wife Anne Atherton, in Emporia, Kansas, where he was born in 1921. His parents were Willard Frame Barber and Murelle Estelle Xavier Bechtoldt Barber. Bill and Anne both attended the old Training School at KSTC and graduated from EHS in 1939 where Bill played football and basketball. When the war broke out, he left the Phi Delt house at KU to enlist in the Air Force. Before he left for northern Europe, he and Anne were married at her family home in Emporia. In the war he piloted C47’s and C46’s combat troop carriers, including both in the Battle of the Bulge and the Rhine River Crossing. In one parachute drop alone he returned with 35 holes in his plane. While in France, he also acquired a motorcycle – the British MP’s are still looking for their bike. Flying home to the US, they landed in Norway to refuel. In the middle of the Norwegian countryside, Bill and his crew were greeted by a young teacher and her group of grade schoolers singing the US National Anthem, a moment he always cherished. Following the war, Bill returned to KU to complete his business degree, and then went on to KU Law School “to make his mother happy.” After law school, Bill and Anne created a wonderful life together, first in Colorado Springs where Nancy was born, and later in California where Brad was born. They moved to Clayton, Missouri in 1954 where he began his career at Brown Shoe Company. Family vacations often included Nancy and Brad spotting bonefish in the flats off the Florida Keys, their father with fly rod in hand. In 1978 Bill and Anne retired to Naples and their grandson Kyle was born. Bill began teaching him golf as soon as he could swing a club. One of his favorite memories was watching his 10 year old grandson par three holes on the front nine at Pebble Beach. Bill and Anne looked forward to frequent trips back to Kansas to spend time with their family. Anne died in 2002. Bill married Janet Webb in 2007. They enjoyed 10 wonderful years together, including many rounds of golf at Wilderness in Naples and at Crystal Downs in Michigan. In Janet’s words, “We had a lot of fun.” His survivors include Janet; his stepdaughter, Cathy Webb; his daughter, Nancy Waugh and her husband Bruce; and his grandson, Kyle Waugh and his wife Jacquelin. Despite the hardships of the war and the loss of his son Brad, Bill often marveled about his fortunate life. His intense intellectual curiosity remained with him until the end. He wrote poetry, read incessantly, enjoyed Yo-Yo Ma, John Coltrane and Bob Dylan, and adored his Jayhawks. A perpetual optimist, his love of life and his family was infectious. He took us to beautiful places, left us with great memories, and made us better people. We will miss him forever.
