Description	:	Willard John (Stein) Gropel was born to John & Ella [Heeren] Groepel on December 21, l9l2 in Marion, South Dakota. He was raised in Marion and graduated from high school. He continued his education at USD in Vermillion, South Dakota. Following college, Willard returned home and purchased the family store. He operated Groepel General Merchandise as a third generation owner for three years. During this time, he met Phyllis Grim, and on May 10, 1941 the couple united in marriage in Marion. Read More	Willard John (Stein) Gropel was born to John & Ella [Heeren] Groepel on December 21, l9l2 in Marion, South Dakota. He was raised in Marion and graduated from high school. He continued his education at USD in Vermillion, South Dakota. Following college, Willard returned home and purchased the family store. He operated Groepel General Merchandise as a third generation owner for three years. During this time, he met Phyllis Grim, and on May 10, 1941 the couple united in marriage in Marion. The couple later moved to Wichita, Kansas, where Willard was employed by Boeing Aircraft for three years. The couple returned to Marion for a brief time until moving to Ivanhoe, Minnesota, in 1946. In Ivanhoe, Willard became the proprietor of Gropel Hardware, which he operated for the next 27 years until his retirement in 1973. At his retirement, Willard and Phyllis moved to a farm just west of Ivanhoe. In 1993, they sold the farm and moved to Luverne, Minnesota. On Sunday June 12, 2005 Willard died at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at the age of 92 years, five months,and 2l days. Willard was a member of the United Methodist Church in Luverne. He loved to travel and especially enjoyed the wintering in Texas for 22 years of his retirement. Willlard is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis; two sons, Bill and his wife Florence of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, and Gregg and his wife Jane of Luverne, Minnesota; one sister, Luella Schlueter of Hills, Minnesota; and seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Elmer Groepel; and one sister Mabel Gladsee.
