Cooley, aged 79 years, 4 months and 16 days. Thus is recorded the passing from the earth one of Madison county's most venerable and venerated pioneers. For more than 37 years this aged and esteemed citizen has been a conspicuous figure in this commonwealth, and his taking away makes an irreparable breach in some of the leading families in this community. During this period he always acted the part of an energetic, public spirited participant in all matters of popular interest, and being a man of strong individuality, was ever outspoken and often foremost in the inauguration of measures for for the benefit of the locality in which his lot was cast. In politics he was a democrat of the most enthusiastic and uncompromising type, and at exciting election periods the intenseness of his personality often made him a conspicuous figure. As a business man he was quite successful, and became, as a ranchman and stockgrower, which for years were his principal occupations, a prominent man in his locality, as well as one of the most prosperous. Mr. Cooley was born at Whitefield, New Hampshire, March 20, 1822. April 14, 1847, he married Miss Sophia Wright Frizelle. When he was a young man he removed to Iowa, and in 1864, attracted by the rich discoveries of the year before in Alder gulch, he migrated to the then territory of Idaho, first locating at Virginia City, which he reached in April of that year. Here he was engaged in various pursuits for several years and then removed to the Madison valley, where he located a ranch and engaged in the stock raising industry, which he continued with greater or less success until a few years ago, when he retired from active business. The ranch is now managed by his son, William N. Cooley. His wife, Mrs. Sophia W. Cooley, died on the 22d of August, 1900, in the house where the subject of this sketch painlessly and peacefully breathed his last Monday afternoon, within 17 days from the year after the aged partner of his life preceded him to "the unfathomable shades of the great beyond." Mr. Cooley's death was not caused by disease of any sort. It was simply the laying down of the burden of life by one who had borne his full share of its toils and vicissitudes. Up to the celebration of Independence Day he had all the appearance of a hearty, vigorous old man. But, when the excitement of that occasion had passed, signs of decadence were plainly visible, and he gradually waned away until the end came and he tranquilly fell into the last long slumber in which his spirit took flight to join the loved one who had gone before but one short year ago. In the last days of his life he was cheered by the presence of his four children, Mrs. Mary B. Elling, Mrs. Katie A. Buford, Miss Bessie Cooley and Mr. W. N. Cooley, who, with the deceased citizens grandchildren, were frequent - almost constant - attendants at his bedside. All that tender hands could do or loving hearts suggest to smooth his pathway at the end was done, and the transition from life to death was apparently calm, happy and peaceful. Besides the three daughters above named, the deceased leaves 11 grandchildren (seven in the family of the late Major Henry Elling and four in that of Hon. S. R. Buford) and three great-grandchildren. The funeral took place Tuesday evening, the impressive burial service of the Episcopal church being conducted by the Rev. Charles Quinney at the obsequies. The pall bearers were Joseph Smith, William Marr, O. D. French, Robert Vickers, W. J. Foreman and J. M. Knight.
