M. Jordan, William McCutcheon, John Morris, Hiram Shields, William and Richard Disney, J. S. Freeland, Frank Helton, R. O. Johnson, Aaron Coberly, Charles Allen, Harris Lyons, Silas Lyons, Isaiah Cox, N. L. Williams, William Linn, John Helton, J. W. Riggs, T. D. Kemp and Joseph Coberly. Most of the settlers were from Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. In later years some of the best known citizens of the township were Maj. L. J. Beam, C. A. Thresher, Jacob Coblentz, Alfred A. Disney, Emmor England, Joseph P. Heil, Dr. H. M. Howard, Horace G. Lyons, Alexander McQuiston, Dr. Isaiah M. Tevis, H. M. Zirkle and William A. Zirkle. ************************** William G. Cutler's History of the State of Kansas SHAWNEE COUNTY, Part 52 MONMOUTH TOWNSHIP WM. A. ZIRKLE, farmer, Section 29, P. O. Richland; owns 260 acres, all enclosed and 150 in cultivation, twenty in timber and the rest in pasture and meadow. Raises general crops, his wheat average per acre in 1882 is thirty bushels and oats forty-seven bushels; has comfortable frame dwelling, barn and out buildings; has seven horses, forty head of cattle and forty hogs. Was born in Shenandoah County, Virginia, in 1837, and when eight years of age emigrated with his parents to Ohio, where he remained until 1869, when he came to Kansas and located on his present farm. Was married in 1862 to Miss Susanna, Zirkle, a native of Ohio. ZIRKLE Had Been Resident of Shawnee County Fifty-Eight Years William A. Zirkle, 89, resident of Shawnee County fifty-eight years, died Friday at his home near Richland. Mr. Zirkle was born near New Market, Va., January 22, 1838, and moved to a farm near Urbana, O., in 1845. He came to Kansas in 1869 and settled near Richland where he has lived ever since. He was married in 1862 to Susanna Zerkel. They were the parents of eight sons, seven of whom are living. They are: Charles M. Zirkle, Berryton; E.I. Zirkle, Delia; J. H. and William E. Zirkle, Richland; W.E. Zirkle, Norman, Okla.; D.L. Zirkle, Winfield; and Claude Zirkle, Topeka. He is also survived by a brother, H.M. Zirkle, Richland; two sisters, Mrs. F.W. Leonard, Richland, and Mrs. Clara Disney, Los Angeles, Cal. Twenty-seven grandchildren also survive him. A short funeral service will be held at the Zirkle home at 10 o'clock Sunday afternoon, then the body will be taken to Pleasant Hill Church where a service will be held at 2 o'clock.
