Son of David Alec Askren and Mary Jane Campbell OBITUARY THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT Chariton, Iowa Thursday, March 11, 1948 WILLIAM ARTHUR ASKREN William Arthur Askren, son of Mary Jane and Alec Askren, was born near Columbia, Iowa, on May 13, 1873, and went to his eternal rest on March 1, 1948 at the age of 74 years, nine months and 17 days. His health had been gradually failing for some time and on September 30, he suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he never recovered. His never changing smile was an inspiration to all about him. He was his usual cheerful, patient self through all his pain until early on the morning of February 24 he fell into a deep sleep. He never awakened from this sleep but instead, on March 1, with a smile on his lips, he slipped quietly and peacefully into a sweeter and more restful sleep to awaken one day in a Better Land. Loving hearts and tender hands could not keep him. His passing leaves a vacancy that can never be filled. On March 4, 1896, he was united in marriage to Celestine Moon at Cloud, Iowa. Nine children were born to this union, six of whom, with the widow, survive. They are: Mrs. Aurel Tallmon, Mrs. Lois Irving, Jud, Hazel, Alice and Cleta. Also 15 grandchildren, four great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Laura Finch, one brother, Abb Askren and many devoted nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three small sons, Audrey, Aubrey and Walden, his parents, two sisters, Maggie McCorkle and Izora Wolfe and two brothers, James and Cassius. He was united with the Belinda Christian church during the pastorate of the Rev. E. A. McKim. Final rites, under the direction of the Miley funeral home were held from the Belinda Christian church Wednesday, March 3. The Rev. Warren Hile officiated. Burial was made in the Strong cemetery.
