Helmer was born in Lawrence County, coming to farm near Belle Fourche when he was eight years old. He grew up and worked for his father on that farm. In 1929, Bill and Alma moved to the Kincaid place on Redwater, the place leased by his brothers Ed, John, and Chris. Bill, married in 1925, was the first of the brothers to marry. Chris and John took wives in 1931. The three families had nice living quarters on the Kincaid place. Even though the Helmers never owned the Kincaid farm, it was known as the Helmer Brothers place because they had operated the place as if it were theirs for twenty seven years. During their partnership, Chris, John and Bill had purchased the J.R. Jones place about three and one-half miles southeast of Belle Fourche on the Redwater River. (The farmstead bordered Highway 34 East, and the two story house sat about one half mile east of HWY. 34 on the Helmer/Widdoss Road.) In 1940, Bill and Alma took over the Jones place and moved from the kincaid place. The brothers continued to work together. It was here that Larry and Gary were born and the rest of the family grew up. Gelnn and Betty sill live on a portion of the farmstead. Children of Alma and Bill who died in infancy were Florence, 3/1937; Baby Boy, 10/1933; and Carrie, 3/1937. ------------------
