Rouse, 71, of Nelson became the state's first traffic fatality of 1952 when he was killed outright in a car-train crash near the stockyards east of Edgar about 6:15 on Tuesday evening. He was alone in his car, an old model Ford, when it was struck by a Union Pacific freight at a grade crossing. Members of the train crew said they saw no headlights burning on Rouse's car. The train, southbound to Marysville, Kan., had slowed to 35 miles per hour at the crossing, trainman said, and apparently Rouse did not see the train as he drove onto the tracks. "Rouse was thrown clear of his car. "The front trucks of the train engine were derailed and the Rouse car was demolished, a part of it having been pinned under the engine. The train was delayed about six hours because of the accident. "Rouse, a farmer in the Nelson community, had been in Edgar late Tuesday afternoon, and it is presumed he was on his way home when the accident occurred. His son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Peters, live in Edgar. "George Chraft, Union Pacific passenger agent at Hastings, and the trainmaster from Marysville investigated the accident. "Rouse was born April 2, 1880, at Greenwood. He had farmed in the Nelson neighborhood for many years. "In addition to Mrs. Peters, he is survived by another daughter, Mrs. Walter Crook of Englewood, Colo., and a number of grandchildren. "The funeral services will be Friday afternoon at Edgar and burial will be in the Nelson cemetery (sic). The McGhie Funeral Home at Edgar is in charge." The Nelson Gazette, Thursday, January 3, 1952 William Arthur Rouse, son of Francis and Mary Rouse, was born in Greenwood, Nebr., on April 2, 1880, and departed this life Jan. 1, 1952, at Edgar, Nebr., at the age of 71 years, 8 months and 29 days. When he was a small child his folks moved to Nuckolls County where he spent his entire life on the farm except for two years that he lived in Nelson. He was united in marriage with Henrietta Nelson on Feb. 1, 1900, who preceeded him in death on July 19, 1930. He leaves to mourn his passing his two daughters, Mrs. Hazel Crook who resides in Englewood, Colo., and Mrs. Marguerite Peters of Edgar, Nebr., one sister, Mrs. Ed Robb of Oak, Nebr.; also five grandchildren, Mrs. LaMarlys Trimmer of Englewood, Colo.; Lyndall Scott of the U.S. Coast Guard; LaMarr Scott of the U.S. Navy; Dolores Scott and Sharon Scott of Edgar. One grandson, Lovell Crook, was killed on Jan. 29, 1945, while serving in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. Also surviving are two great granddaughters, Connie and Kathie Trimmer of Englewood; three step grandchildren, Donald Peters of the U.S. Army, Mary Peters of Grand Island and Billy Peters at home. The deceased was a kind and loving father and devoted to his grandchildren. He leaves a host of friends, both young and old, and was known to most of them as "Gramp." He will be greatly missed in his home and in the community as he always had a cheery greeting and a helping hand for everyone. Funeral services were held at Edgar, Nebr., Friday, Jan. 4 at the Presbyterian church, conducted by the Rev. James E. Harris. Burial was at Nelson. The service music was provided by E.E. Hedgcock, J.M. McGhie, Verlyn Milegar and Lulu Belle Wilson, accompanied at the organ by Marilyn Bailey. The pall bearers were: Earl Tevebaugh, Frank Sorenson, Oscar Hall, Ed Monson, Henry Jacobitz and Hans Frerichs, all of whom were old neighbors of the deceased.
