Obituary The Sun, February 12, 1978 Services for William Baker Allnutt, who rose from roots as a farm boy in Dawsonville, Md., to become a general partner of the Baltimore investment banking firm of Baker, Watt & Co., will be held at 10 A.M. tomorrow at the First and Franklin Street Presbyterian Church, 800 Park avenue. Mr. Allnutt, who was 79, died Friday at Keswick following a long illness. Prior to his retirement in July, 1976, he had worked with the firm for 35 years. He began as a registered representative for the firm in 1923, but became a general partner six years later. He held that position until 1965 when he became a limited partner. A familiar sight near the firm's old offices at Calvert and Redwood streets, Mr. Allnutt was sometimes known as "the mayor of Redwood Street." His approach to the investment business was simple and straightforward. "Buy good stuff and stick with it," he told an interviewer three years ago. "Don't trade stock any more than you trade horses. If you do you'll end up with a mule." Raised on a farm, he moved to Baltimore in 1915 after running his uncle's general tore in Dawsonville for a year. At the age of 17, Mr. Allnutt began working for the Fidelity Trust Company. He graduated from the Andrew Small Academy in Frederick and attended night classes at the Johns Hopkins University and the American Institute of Banking. He also was a founder and a director of Communications Electronics, Inc., in Gaithersburg from 1960 to 1967, when it was purchased for the stock equivalent of $27 million by the Watkins Johnson Company of Palo Alto, Calif. Mr. Allnutt was a former director of the National Sash Weight Company, a member of the National Council of Consultants and the Association of Independent Colleges of America. Until recently he was a trustee of Hood College in Frederick and also was active in the U.S. Small Business Administration. He belonged to the Baltimore Rotary Club, the Merchants Club, Baltimore County Club and the Maryland Club and served as chairman of the investment committee of Boumi Temple. He is survived by a son, William B. Allnutt, of Greensboro, N.C.; a daughter, Mrs. Harriette A. Curry, of Casper, Wyo.; five sisters, Miss Annie Lee Allnutt, Miss Nelva T. Allnutt and Mrs. Mary A. Bledsoe, all of Silver Spring, Md., Mrs. Emily A. Loos, of Florida, and Mrs. Esther A. Stracey, of Denver, two brothers, Robert W. Allnutt, Jr., of Kensington, Md. and Benoni D. Allnutt, of Dawsonville, and seven grandchildren.
