(Bun) Justice, retail merchant, a Deacon of the Baptist faith here, and in former years a prominent political figure in the county, died at his home on Richardson Avenue early on New Year's morning, of a heart attack. He was 70 years of age. Mr. Justice had suffered several heart attacks previously, and had been confined to his home for some days, until Thursday of last week when he went down to his store for a short period. On Friday he had had an attack, but apparently had gotten better. In the early morning hours of Saturday he was again seized, and passed away. He came to Crisfield with his parents on Christmas eve, 1879, when he was seven years old, and had made this city his home since that time. While at various times he had been engaged in the seafood business, for most of his life his talents were devoted to retail merchandising. Quite a number of years ago he had one of the largest retail grocery establishments in the down town section of the city. Later, he managed the grocery department of the J. W. Crooks Stores here, until that concern was absorbed by the American food stores chain. For this concern he developed a fine business at Marion, where he was store manager for a number of years. Coming back to Crisfield several years ago, he opened a store of his own on Main street, near the corner of Main and Third streets, and from the start made a success of it, and spread its reputation for service and quality products far and wide. Affiliated with the Baptist church, he was active in the plans for building the magnificent Temple at the corner of Somerset Avenue and Main street, when Dr. Bob Killgore was pastor here. He had served as an official of the church and been prominent in its undertaking for many years, and at his death one of the Deacons of that congregation. In his younger days he played a prominent part in Somerset county politics, as a friend and counselor of the late Lori C. Quinn, Jr., and fought shoulder to shoulder with him through the many and hard campaigns Mr. Quinn made as a candidate for office. A number of past city officials owe their election in large measure to the efforts of him and his friends. His loyalty to a cause, to his family, his friends and his church was one of his outstanding characteristics. His energy and enthusiasm were astonishing, and his planning and action masterly. Mr. Justice had the type of personality that made and kept friends. Big hearted, open handed, there was nothing too much for him to do to aid and assist those who called on him, day or night, and to the poor he was generous and sympathetic and understanding. Held in high regard by all who knew him, there were many who loved him like a brother for his broad outlook on life, his wit, his ability to go straight to the point of a matter, his generosity, and his humanness. Sincere regrets were offered, and tears shed, when news of his death became known. Funeral services were held in the Baptist Temple on Monday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock, with the pastor, Dr. Alfred Schwab, and the former pastor, Dr. J. Yancey Fincher, officiating. Interment was in the family plot in the Crisfield cemetery. The pallbearers were G. E. Sheriff, Dan Pasquella, Charles D. Briddell, Jr., Senator Elwood Dize, J. S. McGrath and Capt. Oscar Howard. The front of the Temple auditorium was banked with one of the largest displays of beautiful floral pieces ever seen in Crisfield, tributes of relatives and friends to one they held in high regard. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Addie M. Justice, one son, Adolph Justice, of this city, and two daughters, Mrs. Thelma Hayman and Mrs. Hasseltyne Howard, both of Baltimore. Five grandchildren, Mrs. Jesse Taylor of Crisfield, Lionel Hearne, of the U.S. Army, and Robert, William, and Dian Justice, and two great-grandchildren. A sister, Mrs. Edith Pruitt, of this city, and a brother, Charles Justice, of Spring City, Pa., also survive. The Crisfield Times, Crisfield, Maryland, Friday, January 7, 1944, pp. 1 and 8
