He departed this life Thursday, March 1, 2018 at the Blue Hill Care Center, Blue Hill, Nebraska at age 92. He attended Nuckolls County School and graduated from Mount Clare High School. Bill was drafted for military service. He failed the physical at Fort Riley, KS and was sent home to put his affairs in order. On February 1, 1949 he married Lola May Kohmetscher at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lawrence, NE. They lived and farmed in the Mount Clare area for 40 years. To supplement the farm income he drove a milk truck for the Red Cloud Cheese Plant, hauled chickens for Armour, worked at the Superior Cement Plant and worked at the Navy Depot in Hastings. At its peak he milked 45 Holsteins twice a day. He retired and moved to Lawrence in 1989. In retirement he repaired and sold golf carts. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lola; one son, Max; infant triplets (2 boys and 1 girl); one granddaughter, Teresa Schendt; his parents; three brothers, Raymond "Bud", Joe and Bernard "Butch"; two sisters, Geri Ostdiek and Kate Yakus; and son-in-law, Ron Weinman. Survivors include his sister Marie James of Olathe, KS; children and spouses: Don (Cheryl) of Tulsa, OK, Roy of Broken Arrow, OK, Betty Weinman of Beatrice, Gene (Jean) of Lawrence, NE, Ted (Yvonne) of Colorado Springs, CO, Lois (Don) Baldwin of Lincoln, Nancy (Mike) Kort of Blue Hill, Dale (Colleen) of Doniphan, Connie Zuroske of Olathe, KS and Jim (Deb) of Ames, IA; sisters-in-law Eleanor (Bud) Schendt of Lawrence, Elaine (Butch) Schendt of Grandview, MO, and Shirley (Joe) Dove of Superior; brother-in-law, Len (Kate) Yakus of Omaha, NE; 28 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services began on Sunday night with a Rosary at Sacred Heart church (sic) in Lawrence. The Mass of Christian of Resurrection was held Monday, March 5, 2018 at Sacred Heart Church in Lawrence with Father Thomas Schultes and Father Loren Pohlmeier as con-celebrants. Assisting with the service were Acolyte, Loren Ostdiek; Lector, Alex Schendt; Altar Boys: Trey Himmelberg and Darren Kathman; Organist, Linda Ostdiek and Song Leader, Sheri Buescher. Four daughters carried the Offertory Gifts to the altar for the Service. They were: Don Schendt, Ted Schendt, Roy Schendt, Dale Schendt, Gene Schendt, and Jim Schendt. Interment was in the St Stephen's parish cemetery south of Lawrence, Nebraska. Because of the high winds on Monday, the usual practice of having a tent over the burial site and a place for the family to sit, was not used. The funeral home was unable to put up the tent. Memorials may be given to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or St. Stephen's Catholic Church. Merten-Butler Mortuary, Blue Hill, Nebraska is in charge of arrangements.
