Dies In Motorcycle Wreck William Boyd Bedsaul., 21, of Moskee, Wyo., was killed Friday night when his motorcycle left the highway about one mile this side of the Halfway house on the Deadwood-Spearfish highway, Sheriff J.O. Twiford said Saturday. Bedsaul left the Halfway house about 10:30 p.m. and three hours later his body was found by Clarence Walker, owner of the Halfway House and Walter Phares, his employee, as they were returning to Deadwood. The motorcycle was found in the ditch about 200 yards from where it had left the highway, and the speedometer showed 85 miles per hour, Twiford said. An investigation by Twiford and Coroner G.H. Mills Spearfish, revealed that Bedsaul's neck had been broken in the fall. An inquest will be held on Monday, Twiford said. The body is at the Buehler funeral home. Bedsaul was employed by the Homestake Mining Company at Moskee and was spending the weekend at Blacktail with his brother, Carroll Bedsaul. He was born July 27, 1926 at Tilford. He attended Lead high school two and one half years, and was in the navy for four years, having been discharged last July. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Bedsaul, Mason City, Ia., formerly of Tilford; four brothers, Carroll Bedsaul, Lead; Bryant Bedsaul, Medford, Mass.; Philip Bedsaul, San Diego, Calif.; and Claire Bedsaul, Mason City, and one sister, Mrs. Charles Kenyon, St. Lawrence. Lead Daily Call, Monday, October 13, 1947, page 1: Inquest Held In Bill Bedsaul Death At an inquest held this morning at the Buehler & Wells Funeral Home in Deadwood, a jury found that William Boyd Bedsaul, 21, of Moskee, Wyo., was killed by accidental means and that he was alone at the time of the accident. Bedsaul was killed Friday night in a motorcycle accident on the Deadwood-Spearfish highway near the Halfway House. The inquest was held before County Coroner G.H. Miller, of Spearfish. Evidence showed that Bedsaul died from a broken neck and there was no evidence of foul play or that he had used alcohol. Jurors were Frank T. Waugh and Ole Peterson of Deadwood and James L. Hoffman of Lead. Witnesses were Glen Buehler, Clarence Walker, Walter Thares, Claude Bedsaul, J.O. Twiford and Larry McDonald. Lead Daily Call, Monday, October 13, 1947, page 3: Bill Bedsaul Rites Set For Thursday Relatives of Billy Bedsaul, victim of Friday night's fatal motorcycle accident, are gathering in the Hills for the funeral rites set for Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the chapel of the Rounsevell Funeral Home in Lead with the Buehler Funeral Home in charge. Mrs. Ella Bedsaul, mother of Billy, and her son, Clare Bedsaul, arrived Sunday night, coming by train. Bryant Bedsaul arrived by plane from Medford, Mass., Sunday night. Philip Bedsaul and his wife are enroute by car from San Diego and are expected to arrive Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kenyon, sister and brother-in-law of Billy, arrived Sunday from St. Lawrence. Claude Bedsaul, Billy's father, and his grandmother, Mrs. Mary Ellen Bedsaul, live at Tilford. An uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Hennen, and Carroll, another brother of Billy's live at Blacktail. The funeral will be a military one, with the Rev. Theodore Sparks, pastor of the Lead Baptist church, assisting. Billy Bedsaul was born in Tilford and came to Lead with his parents at an early age. He received his education in the Lead schools, and entered military service four years ago. He was employed at Moskee, Wyo., at the time of the accident, and was enroute there from a visit with his relatives at Blacktail when the accident which took his life occurred. He was taking the longer route back to Moskee owing to the rough canyon road. Lead Daily Call, Friday, October 17, 1947, page 3: William Bedsaul Is Buried With Military Honors The chapel of the Rounsevell Funeral Home in Lead was filled with friends of William Boyd Bedsaul and of his family for the military funeral rites held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon. The casket, draped with a large American flag, was surrounded with a profusion of flowers. The Buehler and Wells Funeral Home of Deadwood was in charge. The services were under the auspices of Black Hills Post No. 5969 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Deadwood. They were assisted by the Rev. Theodore B. Sparks, pastor of the Lead Baptist church, who gave the sermon. George Rose sang the "Old Rugged Cross," and the Baptist choir of Lead sang "The Touch of His Hand on Mine." Mrs. A.M. Calhoon, representing the Lead and Deadwood posts of the VFW, sang "Sleep Soldier Boy." She played her accompaniment. Miss Marion Bell accompanied the other singers. The committal rites of the Veterans of Foreign Wars was conducted at Mountain Lawn cemetery by Black Hills Post No. 5969 officers including Commander James Shea, assisted by Post Chaplain George Katchuba, junior vice commander Oliver Wiswell, acting senior vice commander Nathan Cockrum and Post Adjutant Dick Waldron. A color guard included Rocky Bissell, Pete Salinsky, Dwayne Albin and Jack Redl. The firing squad, composed of Ernest Hardy, Dale Bruns, Jack Silfven, Gordon Van Offeren, led by Drill Sergeant Stanton Selway, saluted with three volleys over the grave. The flag which draped the casket was then presented to Mrs. Ella Bedsaul, mother of William, after which Bugler Kenneth Rineveld sounded taps. Casket bearers were Orville Whitlock, Floyd Baker, Glenn Hardy, Julius Kline, Louis Kanthack and Francis Vancas. An honorary escort was composed of A.M. Calhoon and Sergeant Robert Hubbard of the Lead post of the VFW, and Elger Edlund, Paul Weisenberg, Damien Heinen, Clifford Caserio, Charles Kenyon and Robert Archer. Billy Bedsaul, as he was familiarly known to friends, was born July 27, 1926, at Tilford, He came to Lead at an early age with his parents, receiving his education in the Lead pubic schools. He was a member of the Lead Baptist church. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at Des Moines, Ia. at the age of 17 years, joining his three older brothers in the service of his country. His basic training was received at Farragut, Ida. He was assigned to the Pacific fleet which took part in the New Guinea, New Georgia and Philippine campaigns. He serviced aboard the Cruiser USS Phoenix, the USS Battleship Iowa and the USS Cruiser Miami. His accidental death early Saturday morning, October 11, was the result of a motorcycle accident on the Spearfish highway. His mother, Mrs. Ella Bedsaul and son Clare left Thursday night to return to their home in Mason City, Ia. A brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kenyon, will go to their home in St. Lawrence Saturday night as will his brother Bryant Bedsaul of Medford, Mass. leave for his home. Another brother Philip and wife, who reached Lead Wednesday, will spend a week here before returning to San Diego, where Philip is stationed at the naval base. The eldest brother Carroll, and an uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Hennen, live at Blacktail. His father, Claude Bedsaul and his grandmother, Mrs. Mary Ellen Bedsaul, live at Tilford.
