Milburn William Carter Milburn was born at Milburnville, near Greenville, Tenn., Nov. 20, 1851, and died very suddenly Sunday morning, March 19, 1944 in Des Moines at the age of 92 years, 3 months, 29 days. He was the third son of Jonathan and Nancy Jane Milburn. They came to Iowa by way of covered wagon and ox team when William was still very young. The Milburns were true pioneers of this community settling just west of the present town site of Stratford. The mother passed on, leaving six small children. The home and family were kept together by the father until all were grown. During the broad expanse of 92 years, he had seen history made, had been a part of it. He drove the ox team, he witnessed scares from Indians, he planted corn by hand, he hauled wheat to the mill to be ground and he rode the stage coaches. Besides carpenter work, he chose farming for an occupation. He never married but made his home with his brothers, Walter and Elbert. In these homes "Uncle Bill" was always considered one of the immediate family. He loved his native hills and rivers and often pointed out to the younger generation the three huge trees, still standing, which he as a child helped his father set out in the yard of the old home. He took great pleasure in caring for animals and was a lover of horses and dogs. During a long life he had many experiences but always enjoyed good health. Death came gently like a leaf gently dropped in a mystic stream with scarcely a stir of the current. He leaves one brother, Elbert, and a large number of nieces and nephews. If Mr. Milburn could speak to us, we feel he would say to us: "Life! We've been long together, Through pleasant and through cloudy weather; 'Tis hard to part when friends are dear; Perhaps 'twill cost a sigh, a tear; Then steal away, give little warning Choose thine own time; Say not Good Night, but in some bright clime Bid me Good Morning." - Contributed Funeral rites were held Wednesday afternoon, March 22 in Calvary Methodist church and were conducted by the Rev. J.G. Waterman. A mixed quartette composed of Miss Minnie Williams, Mrs. E.J. Bergquist, A.T. Johnson and Sam Swedlund, sang, "Does Jesus Care" and "Saved by Grace." Mrs. Roy Bergquist sang "Perfect Day." The pallbearers were E.H. Hawbaker, Axel Olson, Arthur Neese, Bert Ballard, A.A. Deo and Bert H. Wilson. Interment was made in Oakwood cemetery.
