On Jan. 20, 1802 in the Windham Herald was published the following legal notice: • The hon. Court of Probate for the diftrict of Windham [then located at the Borough of Willimantic within the Town of Windham], hath allowed fix months from the date hereof for the Creditors to the eftate of WILLIAM CUSHMAN, late of Windham, deceafed, to exhibit their claims againft faid eftate, well attefted, or be debarred a recovery according to law. PETER CUSHMAN, Adminiftrator. Windham Jan. 20, 1802. Because William: • 1) m. of record both his 2nd [Ruth Robinson] and 3rd [Anna (Robinson) Rindge] wives of record at the Scotland, Conn. Congregational Church; • 2) his estate was administered at Windham in 1802 by son Peter; • 3) the same two Robinson brothers-in-law (Experience and Abner) in the 1800 census are knowingly interred at the original north portion of the Scotland cemetery with extant gravestones; and • 4) his widow Anne (called "Mrs. Amie Cushman, relict of Mr. William Cushman" died "at Scotland" in the Sept. 1804 newspaper notice of her death, it is reasonable to assume William Cushman is interred at the original north section of the Scotland cemetery without a now extant gravestone. A 2005 personal visit by the writer of this cemetery indicated numerous areas where once stood a gravestone while numerous gravestones, or only portions of former gravestones, were against the stonewall at the bottom of the cemetery. On Sept. 3, 1747 of record at Plympton, Mass., William m. 1) Sarah Holloway, whose parents have not been identified.[1] They had the following children of record at Plympton, Mass., albeit the last two are less distinct in the Plympton records: • i. William Cushman, Jr., b. Mar. 3, 1747/48, d. Feb. 19, 1813 at Castleton, VT; m. Dec. 27, 1770 at the Brooklyn, Conn. Cong. Ch., Mary Weaver, b. circa 1747. She d. May 3, 1830 at Castleton, VT. Both are interred at the Castleton Cong. Churchyard [VT VRs] • ii. Abigail Cushman, b. Feb. 28, 1750/51, d. Sept. 23, 1803 at Killingly, Conn. (g.s.); m. Jan. 31, 1771 at the Brooklyn, Conn. Cong. Ch., Robert Howe, s. of Josiah Howe and Patience Day, b. at Plainfield, Conn. It is likely he m. 2) Abigail's indistinctly recorded sister Susanna Cushman, both of whose fates have not been found. See Susanna below. • iii. Thomas Cushman, b. Jan. 5, 1753; no further record of him has been found. • iv. Daniel Cushman, b. June 28, 1755; m. Dec. 21, 1777 at the Brooklyn, Conn. Cong. Ch., Mary Bowman, by whom he had four children recorded at Canterbury, Conn. betw. 1778 and 1786. This family not traced further. • v. Ezra Cushman, b. Nov. 29, 1759; no further record of him has been found. • vi. Rebecca Cushman, who in the Plympton vital records is recorded in brackets as "(Rebekah, ch. William [q.v.] and Sarah Holloway (first w.), ___)" while the Shurtleff Gen. ascribes a birth date of "circa 1764." No further record of such child has been found, and possibly she or Susanna below may have been born prior to brother Ezra in 1759 above. • vii. Susanna Cushman, who in the Plympton vital records is recorded in brackets as "(Susanna, ch. William [q.v.] and Sarah Holloway (first w.), ___)" while the Shurtleff Gen. ascribes a birth date of "circa 1766." Following the recorded death of Abigail (Cushman) Howe above, a Susanna Cushman of Windham m. Robert Howe at Windham in 1805 (Windham VRs), the only Cushman or Howe record in the published Windham VRs. When wife Sarah Holloway died is not of record at Mass., thus it is highly likely she d. after husband William relocated to Connecticut. In this era it was unusual for a widower under 50 years of age to wait more than a few years to remarry especially if he had numerous children who were still minors. On May 4, 1775 of record at the Scotland Society Cong. Ch., then located within the confines of the Town of Windham, Conn., William m. 2) Ruth Fuller, dau. of Peter Robinson, Jr. and Ruth Fuller, b. Dec. 14, 1740 at Windham, Conn. She d. Apr. 11, 1791 of record at Brooklyn, Conn., but it is highly likely she is interred without extant gravestone at the old north section of the Scotland Cemetery at present-day Scotland, Conn. They had four children recorded at Brooklyn, Conn. who are outlined in their mother's memorial. On Jan. 31, 1792 of record at the Scotland Society Cong. Ch., William m. 3) Anne Rindge, the childless widow of Daniel Ridge, latter who d. at Windham in 1788. Anne was the dau. of Ens. Thomas and Anna Robinson of Windham, Conn., b. May 1, 1733 at Windham, and paternal niece of William Cushman's 2nd wife Ruth Robinson. The notice of her death was published in the Windham Herald Sept. 6, 1804 without a specific date of death. No known children resulted from this marriage. The 1917 Shurtleff Genealogy is often used as the basis of the genealogy of this William Cushman family. However, it contains historical errors regarding the ancestry of William's 2nd and 3rd wives. These errors are addressed in the memorial for 2nd wife Ruth Robinson. [1] Neither the Shurtleff (1917) nor Cushman (1855) genealogies provide an identity of Sarah's parents. A communicant offers the possibility she may be the Sarah Holloway born June 19, 1726 and baptized Aug. 5, 1739 in Pembroke, Mass. (VR 1:108), dau. of Thomas Holloway and Rebecca (Tubbs) Holloway.
