One of the greatest shocks that this community has experienced in a long time was when it was reported last Friday evening [Nov 24] that Will Calhoun had been found dead in the barn at his home two miles northwest of here. Not withstanding the fact that Will Calhoun's life had been almost one continuous chain of misfortune from accidents, the startling intelligence could hardly be believed at first. Only that morning he was in Potter in the best of health and spirits, and after transacting some business here, carried the mail over a portion of the rural route for his brother, Leon, who had planned to go to Atchison on the motor on some business that evening. Will had been doing some chores about the barn and when he failed to appear for supper about 6 o'clock, Leon Calhoun sent his little nephew, Leon Henninger, to the barn to see about him. The boy found the body of his uncle lying in the barn across the south doorway. He rushed back and notified the household of his gruesome discovery. Both Drs. Redmond and Myers were summoned, but when they arrived life was extinct and probably was when the boy found the body, as he says he took hold of the body and there was not the slightest movement. The physicians who examined the body, found no abraisions except a slight scratch on the right leg below the knee. Later it was found that two ribs were broken and a large bruise, as if from a violent blow, manifested itself at the base of the brain, near the spine. This, undoubtly, was the cause of death. It was the supposition that when Will opened the north door of the barn to admit light while he was working, some unbroken horses rushed from the lot through the opening, and either trampled or crowded or kicked him to death. A coroner's inquest was held the following day, and the jury, composed of Frank and Tobe Maxwell, John Highfill, Barney Fleer, J. O. Barker and Pete Funk, concurred to the above theory, the evidence seeming to substantiate the same. William D. Calhoun was 61 years of age, having been born June 4, 1866, at Round Prairie, where his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Calhoun originally settled when they came to Kansas. Later they moved to the farm northwest of Potter, where both parents and son died. Will Calhoun was a widely known and popular citizen. He had served as township trustee and was deputy rural mail carrier out of Potter, his brother, Leon, being the regular carrier. He was a member of the Masonic, Modern Woodmen and Fraternal Aid lodges, and carried insurance in the two latter to the amount of $4,000, besides about $2,000 of old line insurance. Besides the above brother he leaves another, James, and a sister, Mrs. Isaac Porter. He had been married, but he and his wife had had separated. To them were born two Children, Mrs. Robert Blodgett, of Cummings, and Mrs. Blanche Cline, of Atchison, both of whom survive. Will Calhoun had been very unfortunate as regards accidents. It is believed that no man who ever lived in this part of the country suffered as many serious mishaps and had as many narrow and almost miraculous escapes. We hope to be able to compile at least a partial list of these accidents in next week's Kansan. The remains were brought to the M. E. church, at Potter, where funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, the sermon being delivered by Rev. M.L. McCoy. It was one of the largest funerals ever held in Potter. The funeral was in charge of the Masons. Interment was in Fairview cemetery.
