He was born March 10, 1927 at Norfolk and was adopted as an infant by William F. and Alvina (Neu) Heitman of Crete. He was baptized in 1927 at St. John Lutheran Church at Kramer. He was born March 10, 1927 at Norfolk and was adopted as an infant by William F. and Alvina (Neu) Heitman of Crete. He was baptized in 1927 at St. John Lutheran Church at Kramer. He grew up on a farm near Crete and attended country school at North District #88 and St. John parochial school at Kramer. He graduated from Crete High School in 1944. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln until he was 18 years of age. He then entered basic training and was deployed to the Pacific Theatre of Operations in World War II with the U.S. Army Medical Corp. where his troops became the first occupation forces in Japan. After his discharge from active duty, he worked as an x-ray technician at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln and then as an accountant for Fairmont Foods in Crete. On June 13, 1948 he married Esther Jans at St. John Lutheran Church in Kramer.They made their home in Crete until 1979 when they moved to their newly built home on the family farm southeast of Crete. In October 1950 he was recalled to active duty in the Korean conflict, where he was assigned to a rehabilitation hospital near Osaka, Japan as an x-ray technician. After returning home, he continued his career as an accountant at Misle Chevrolet Co. and for 30 years at Feed Service Corp in Crete. He also continued to work and manage the family farm. In 1990 he helped develop the Crete Municipal Hospital Foundation and became its first director. Bill was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Crete where he was an elder and church officer. He held local and state offices in the Nebraska Jaycees. He was a member of the Crete Lions Club since 1959, serving as local president and District Governor. He was instrumental in the completion of the Nebraska Eye Institute and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Lions Eye Bank of Nebraska. His service in the Lions Club earned him the International President's Award in 1986 and the prestigious Melvin Jones Award in 1988. Bill and his wife, Esther, received the Crete Sertoma Service to Mankind Award in 1996 for service to the Crete Community. He was treasurer of the District 88 school board and was on the board of the Aid Association for Lutherans. Bill was a lover of antique cars and restored a 1930 Model A Ford and a 1959 Chevrolet. He belonged to several antique car clubs. His hobbies included collecting pens and pencils, toy farm machinery, antique cars, and Jim Beam decanters. He enjoyed raising horses,Golden Retriever dogs, and was a devoted spectator at his grandchildren's activities. He is survived by his wife, Esther; daughter, Linda Papik of Crete; son, James Heitman of Wilber; grandchildren, Jeffrey and Brady Papik of Crete; Kara and Jason Potter of Stockville; Kayla and Laura Heitman of Wilber; brother-in-law and spouse, Orval and Charlotte Jans of Seward, many nieces and nephews and cousins. Funeral services were June 1 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Pastor Nathan Ristvedt officiating. The Ambassadors of Harmony provided the music accompanied by Jayne VanAsperen. Military Honors were by Crete VFW Post 4959. Interment was at St. John Lutheran Cemetery at Kramer. Pallbearers were Jeffrey Papik, Brady Papik, Jason Potter, Steve Ress, Gary Meinke, and Ken Tesar. Honorary pallbearers were the Crete Lions Club. Kuncl Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Memorials are to Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Crete Hospital Foundation in care of the family.
