After 47 days, the ship arrived in New... Read More	William Draper 1833-1891 William Draper was born March 20, 1833 in Chatham, Kent, England to William Draper and Jane (Woolwitt) Draper. He left England, via way of Liverpool on January 17, 1853 and sailed on a ship called the "Ellen Maria". He was listed on the passenger manifesto with an occupation as a Butler. The Eller Maria was one of the ships engaged in carrying Mormon converts of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to America. On that same ship traveled his future bride and her family. After 47 days, the ship arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana on March 7, 1853. From New Orleans they traveled up the river to St. Louis, stayed six weeks, and resumed their journey by steamboat. They went as far as Keokuk, Iowa, from which point they traveled by ox-team in a Mormon train across Iowa to Council Bluffs, and crossed the river by flat boat at Florence, Nebraska, then proceeded their travel westward to Utah. William Draper, along with about 400 others, traveled overland as part of the Cyrus H. Wheelock Company, arriving in the Salt Lake Valley on 16 October 1853, after about 135 days on the trail. He married Mary Jane Galley in 1856. She was the daughter of James Henry Galley and Ann (Whittaker) Galley. They later moved to Cedar Valley, where General Johnson had established his camp in 1857. William's father-in-law, James Galley was not pleased with conditions among the Mormons in Utah and decided by relocate to Nebraska, and William followed. They became the parents to six children. Their first child, Mary Jane "May" (Draper) Smith was born in the Utah Territory. Their next two sons; Charles Camp Draper and Cassius William "Cash" Draper were born in Columbus, Platte county, Nebraska. Their forth child, Julia Anna (Draper) Paasch was born in Iowa. Their last two sons, Thaddeus Stephens "Thad" Draper and Judson Wolvert Draper were born in Schuyler, Colfax county, Nebraska. His wife, Mary died in 1875 and William married a second time to Sarah Elizabeth "Bettie" McClung, on March 8, 1880 in Schuyler, Colfax county, Nebraska. She was the daughter of Samuel W. McClung and Mary J. (Pool) McClung. He had one additional child with Sarah; a son, William S. "Willie" Draper. William passed away September 20, 1891 in Schuyler, Colfax county, Nebraska from Brites Disease. He was buried in the Schuyler City Cemetery in Scuyler, Colfax county, Nebraska. The Columbus Journal Newspaper, Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska, dated (Wednesday) September 23, 1891. DRAPER--Wm. Draper died on Sunday morning at 10:30 at his home in Schuyler, Colfax county. He was one of the old settlers of Platte, in 1861 owned the Stenger farm east of John Tannahill's nursery. His funeral takes place Thursday at 10 a.m. The Columbus Weekly Telegram Newspaper, Columbus, Platte county, Nebraska, dated (Thursday) September 24, 1891. An Old Settler Called Home Sunday afternoon the news spread about throughout Schuyler that William Draper, one of the pioneer residents of this section of Nebraska, had died. He had been an invalid for the past year and although at times very low, his death, which occurred shortly after 5 o'clock, was a shock to the entire community where he had lived the past 12 years, an honored and respected citizen. As early as 1853, in company with George Galley Sr. and family, he crossed the plains and spent about 6 years in the west, after which he returned to Nebraska and settled in Platte county, buying the west half of what is now known as Galley farms, east of town. Some time afterward, he purchased the Stenger place, southeast of this city. Early in the 1870's he moved to Shell creek about 5 miles north of Schuyler, where he owned a number of farms. The last 12 years of his life he lived at Schuyler. He was twice married and leaves a large family. He is a brother-in-law to J. H. Galley of this city. Draper died Sunday, Sept 20, 1891, at 5 o'clock p.m. of Bright's disease. Mr. Draper has been sick for several years. For the last year or more, it was expected that he would drop off at any hour. His tenacity of life has been something very remarkable. The funeral was set for today (Thursday) in order that distant relatives could have an opportunity to attend. Wm. Draper was a settler when Colfax county was organized and has been a prominent citizen of the county since. He has been respected as a good citizen, and admired as a man of more than ordinary intelligence. Mr. Draper was born in Chatham, Kent county, England, March 20, 1833. Entered the English Nacy at age of 16. Came to America before he was 21. Settled in Nebraska in 1860. Was commissioned 2d Lieut. of First Brigade of Nebraska Militia in Nov. 1864. Mr. Draper has been twice married. His first wife was Miss Galley of Platte county, which county originally comprised all of Platte and Colfax. She died about 15 years ago. The children surviving are all grown - four sons and two daughters. In 1880 Mr. Draper married Miss Bettie McClung of Schuyler. To this marriage was born one son aged now about 6 years. On Sunday, September 20, at 5 o'clock p.m., William Draper died at his home in this city after a long illness. He was born in Chatham, Kent county, England, on March 20, 1822, hence was 58 years and 6 months old at his death. At the age of sixteen he entered the British Navy, but ere he had yet reached his twenty-first year he was an American citizen. He became a resident of Nebraska in 1860, being one of this state's pioneers. He first was a land owner in Platte county, near Columbus, but of more recent years was a big farmer on Shell creek, this county. During last half dozen years of his life he lived in this city. He was twice married, his last wife now living and it was she who so tenderly cared for him when he could no longer care for himself. By the first union a number of children were born, all of whom are grown to manhood and womanhood. The second wife bore him one child, a son, yet little more than a baby. During the early years he was lieutenant in the Nebraska militia and in civil affairs he held many positions of trust, being once county commissioner. He was a man of sterling qualities and his word was his law. He was highly regarded and was a citizen of good repute and excellent character. During his last years he was an invalid, being almost helpless and his death relieved much suffering. The funeral is to be held on Thursday and the last sad rites will be performed over the remains of one of Colfax county's oldest and best residents.
