Read More	Dayton Review August 7, 1958 WILLIAM POWERS IN BUSINESS HERE OVER 50 YEARS, IS DEAD Stores Close For Funeral Service To pay the respect due one of Dayton's Old Time Businessmen, the local stores closed from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon in honor of William (Bill) Powers, 81 years old, who suffered a stroke at his home on Wednesday of last week, July 30th, and passed away at Lutheran Hospital on Sunday, August 3. Rev. Harlan W. Faris, Pastor, officiated, while Carsons of Dayton were in charge of all arrangements. Masonic rites were observed at the cemetery. During the church service, Mrs. Jessie Erickson sang Old Rugged Cross and Beyond the Sunset, and was accompanied by Mrs. Jerry Johnson. Mrs. Jerry Johnson,, Mrs. Glen Beckman, Mrs. Ralph Bowman and Mrs. Mildred Vegors cared for the flowers. Casket bearers were Jerry Johnson, A. L. Holmstrom, Van Gabrielson, Robert Young, Ed Larson and Herbert Peterson, all close friends or neighbors. Honorary bearers were Roscoe Leonard, Sam Burnquist, T. W. Swanson, J. Albert Peterson, William Coomer, Frank H. Ferguson and M. A. Hedberg, business associates and friends of long years. Burial was made in the beautiful Dayton Cemetery. Mr. Powers had not been in the best of health for some time, although he had been down town several times a week until last week or two. He was taken to the hospital after the stroke, and even this news was sad to his friends of this community, and his passing away was shocking news to everyone. Young and old, everyone in this vicinity called him Bill, and was always greeted in return by a smile, and a friendly remark. Bill started in business here, as a helper to his father, Billy Powers, Sr. and after a few years lathering necks, as he said, he joined his father as a partner, even yet a very young man. After years as a barber in his own shop, Bill entered into the General Merchandise Business in about 1914, with the firm known as Olson, Peterson and Powers, and was in the store located on the corner of Main and Skillet Streets. In later years he went into the Grocery business on his own, in which he stayed for many years, located in the present Review Building and the last few years in his building where Hanson Electric is now located. He retired from active business about 15 years ago after serving the people of Dayton for more than 50 years. Bill was one of several honored at the regular meeting of the Community Club in June of this year, as beautiful plaques were presented to them for their Fifty Years or more in Dayton Businesses. He was pleased beyond words by the plaque and recognition given him. He had been a member for years in the Dayton Volunteer Fire Department, and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Dayton Mutual Telephone Company. He was also a Board member of the Dayton Cemetery Association, and served for years in several groups interested in the betterment of the community. He was Clerk of the Modern Woodmen Lodge and was a member of the Masons and Eastern Star groups. Bill was honest, sincere, and a good friend to all. His place is a difficult one to fill within this community, one of the Old Timers, to which the residents of Dayton will ever owe a great deal. Surviving Mr. Powers are his wife, Matilda, and a brother, Tom Powers, of Memphis, Nebraska and several other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. OBITUARY WILLIAM EDGAR POWERS William Edgar Powers, son of Sarah Powers, was born on October 4, 1877 at Ogden, Iowa. When he was about 3 years old he moved, with his parents, to Paton, Iowa where he resided until 1887 when the family moved to Dayton. With the exception of one year, Mr. Powers has since lived in this community. When Mr. Powers was 10 years of age he began learning the barber trade from his father. He was united in marriage to Miss Matilda Caroline Putzke on June 20, 1900 at the Putzke farm North East of Dayton. Mr. Powers continued working at the barber trade until 1914 when he purchased part interest in the General Store in Dayton known as Olson, Peterson and Powers. Some years later he had a grocery store of his own. This spring, Will, as he was known by his friends, received a plaque from the Dayton Commercial Club in recognition of being in business in Dayton for 50 years or more. He retired from business in 1948. Mr. Powers was a man who was interested in his community and was willing to serve it with his best ability. At different times he served the community as town councilman, on the telephone board, and on the Fire department. He was a member of the Cemetery Board when he deceased. Mr. Powers was a member of Oak Lodge of the Order of Masons. He received the certificate of Merit for 50 years of continuous membership. He was a member of Acorn chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. For many years he was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America. He was a member of the Methodist Church at Dayton having united by the profession of his faith in 1940. On Tuesday morning, Mr. Powers became ill while mowing in his yard. He was taken to the hospital but failed to rally. He departed this earth on Sunday morning, August 3, 1959. He leaves to mourn: his wife, one brother, Thomas A. Powers of Memphis, Nebraska. Three nephews, many other relatives, and many friends.
