Description	:	William Frank Shiffer, a pioneer citizen and civil war veteran passed away at his home in Nodaway, Monday morning at 2:30 following a brief illness of ten days. Death was due to flu complications and old age. He leaves a wife and six children. Funeral services will not be held until Friday in order that those from a distance may attend. To us who mourn this life has been as pure as is possible for a man to be, and as we bow our heads in sorrow and our hearts ache with pain, we cannot forget another who shared his cares and pleasures and who has walked beside him in life and with her devotion and love has preserved all that which is pure in him, our mother. William Franklin Shiffer, was born June 23, 1842 in Chatbams Run, Clinton County, Pennsylvania and died April 16, 1928, aged 85 years, 10 months, and 24 days. On March 8, 1868, he was united in marriage to Eliza J. Catherman of Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania. To this union were born nine children, three of whom have passed on before and six living, who were all present at the funeral. The living children are Mrs. Ella Colburn and Mrs. Verdills Fitzgerald of Fullerton, Nebraska, Harve Shiffer of Los Angeles, California, Mrs. Ida Hamilton of Helgrade, Nebraska, Mrs. S. W. Barker of Silver Creek, Nebraska, Clyde Shiffer of Twin Falls, Idaho. Mr. Shiffer leaves to mourn his departure the loving wife and these four daughters and two sons; one sister, Mrs. Anna Hixon of Hiawatha, Kansas, and many other relatives and friends. He with his family came to Nodaway in 1880. In the year of 1893, he was postmaster of Nodaway. He held the office of township clerk for several years. He was also president of the cemetery association. He served the public very faithfully and was ready to help any enterprise for good of the community. He united with the Presbyterian Church in 1882. He was one of the oldest members and was an elder in the church for many years up to the time of his death. He was superintendent of the Sabbath School and was a faithful member. He was since childhood an honest, upright Christian man. He was a veteran of the civil war, having enlisted October 18, 1863, and was discharged July 15, 1865. He served in Company F., 49th Pennsylvania Infantry Company, 6th Army Corps. He was a gallant and brave soldier, ever faithful to his duties and was well liked by his comrades. He was a member of the G.A.R. past. He held the office of commander, trustee, and was adjutant for a number of years up to the time of his death. He was one of the charter members. Mr. Shiffer will be missed in the community because his place is empty. In his death, the family loses a loving and devoted father, the church an earnest and zealous worker. The funeral was held at the Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Overholser and Rev. Ellis of the M. E. Church. The music was furnished by the quartet, Lloyd Means, Leon Rider, Mrs. Means, and Cecil Everett. The hymns sung were, "Asleep in Jesus" and "The Home of the Soul."
