Description	:	William Fred Popin is the son of Fyodor Abrosimovich Poppin and Martha Savelivna Popoff. He was born in Salim, Kars, Russia. He immigrated about 1906 from Russia to America. His father died in Russia before me immigrated. There were five known children in the family: John (who is my grandfather), Elmer, William, Jack and Mary. His first wife was Proskovya Ivanovna Batieff who died in Huntington Park, CA in 1929. They had the following children: Anna, William, John, Hazel, Martha, Alice, Fred, June, and Mary Jane. Bet. 1929 - 1930 he married Martha Patovna Susoeff. She was the widow of William Timofae Susoeff and five children. That marriage did not last. His last wife was Mary George Samaduroff, widow of Michael Ivanovich Kobseff and with seven children. Mary died in 1963. ====================== Notes from a conversation with Uncle Bill's grandson, William (Binky): William Fred Popin came to America about 1905 and landed in Galveston, Texas. The family ran out of money and had to stay in Texas for awhile. They eventually arrived in San Francisco. According to Binky, his grandfather told him the family literally ran away from their village and fled to catch a ship to America. They had gunny sacks in which they placed dry bread, dried fruit and nuts, wheat kernels. They stashed the items in the bag and the family lived off the contents on the ship. Due to the strict dietary beliefs of their Molokan faith, having their own food was a necessity. Binky also said that in the old country, the Batieff family owned a farm. The father of that family died and left a widow, 5 or 6 daughters and 2 sons ages 5 and 6 years old. The family needed a young man to help do the chores. William Fred went to the farm to help and met his wife Alice Batieff, who was one of the daughters. He went back to his family and told two of his cousins that there were some handsome Batieff daughters where he was working. His cousin James Popoff married Mary Batieff. His other cousin James Popoff married Dorothy Batieff. He ran out of cousins, so Jacob Peter Conovaloff married Hazel Batieff.
