He was after a load of straw and in climbing upon the straw stack, slipped on some ice and fell onto the side of the double wagon box, injuring the prostatic gland. He is in a very serious condition at this writing, and according to his present condition it is doubtful if he will survive his injuries. Stratford Courier February 19, 1914 William George McGowan passed away at his home west of Stratford Wednesday morning, February 11, 1914, his death being the result of an accident which occurred the previous Saturday. Mr. McGowan was born May 6, 1867, at Darlington, Virginia, and at the time of his death was 47 years, 9 months and 5 days of age. His father died about three months before he was born and his mother and grandmother are still living, the latter being 104 years of age. He was united in marriage to Ella Huxford at Dunreath, Iowa, in 1886. Four children were born to this union - Mrs. J.E. Wright of Roscoe, Penn., Earl McGowan, who is in Australia, Clarence McGowan, who died at the age of two years, and Miss Ethel McGowan, who has been living with her father and who was the only member of the family present when he died. He left a sister, Mrs. Mary Kinney, and a brother, John, who reside at Darlington, Virginia. Mr. McGowan was a big hearted man, willing to help those in need and would often neglect his own work to assist a friend or neighbor. The funeral services were held Friday afternoon at one o'clock at the residence, conducted by Rev. H. Albertson, and the remains were laid to rest in the Swede Bend cemetery.
