Description	:	Company B, 21st Iowa Volunteer Infantry The History of Clayton County and three affidavits signed by Mr. Appleton indicate he was born on July 22, 1839 which coincides with his given age of 23 when he enlisted on August 16, 1862 at New Stand, Iowa, in Company B of what would be the 21st Regiment of Iowa Volunteer Infantry. The Company was mustered in on August 18th and the regiment on September 9th. They left Dubuque on September 16, 1862, went south, and served initially in Missouri. That winter William contracted a severe cold that settled in his chest. When they reached Iron Mountain, he was hospitalized. Officers felt his life was in jeopardy and, on March 20, 1863 at St. Genevieve, he was granted a furlough to go north to recuperate. He was accompanied by a comrade, John Carpenter, as far as Farley and rejoined the regiment in Mississippi on May 5, 1863. He was with the regiment on May 16th when it was held in reserve during the Battle of Champion's Hill and he was with it the next day when the 21st and 23rd Iowa Infantries led an assault at the Big Black River. On May 22d he participated in an assault at Vicksburg and he remained with the regiment during its subsequent service in Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, and Alabama. He was mustered out with the regiment at Baton Rouge on July 15, 1865. After returning to civilian life, he married Phoebe Lovett on June 9, 1867 at Guttenberg. Their first two children, Ida and Sylvia died in 1870. Their next child was Lena May who was born April 13, 1871. She was followed by their five other children.
