Dryden, former Sheriff of Somerset county and prominent Crisfield business man, passed away at his home on Chesapeake avenue extended, at approximately 5.30 o'clock last Saturday morning. Death was the result of a heart attack. Although he had suffered several heart attacks prior to his death, he was able to work right up to the last. He had spent the day Friday pursuing his usual business duties and had been the last to leave his place of business at the end of the day. It was during the night that the fatal attack occurred. Mr. Dryden who was fifty-five years of age, was the son of the late Whittington Dryden, and Emma Evans Dryden, pioneer residents of Somerset county. Born near Crisfield, where he spent his entire life, Mr. Dryden had always been an energetic, industrious man. In his younger days he followed the water, a life which he thoroughly loved. Later, he decided to go into business for himself and established the food firm which bears his name. Because of his knowledge of the industry, learned during his days on the water, and because of the industriousness for which he was justly noted, he was able to make a success and at his death was known as one of the leading seafood dealers in this city. A man of unquestioned integrity, honest in his dealings with everyone, he was known and loved by a legion of warm friends in whose hearts his death has left a vacant spot that can never be filled. His was a charitable nature and he believed in always helping those less fortunate than himself. Though in politics, he was ever a staunch Democrat, he aspired to public office only on one occasion. In 1934 he was a candidate for Sheriff of Somerset county and was elected by one of the largest majorities ever given any candidate in this county. By doing his job well he proved worthy of this great confidence placed in him by the voters. His term expired in 1938. His funeral, held from the home at 2:00 o'clock Monday afternoon, was one of the largest ever held in this city and long before the appointed hour the house was filled with friends whose hearts were made heavy by the loss of one they had loved so dearly. Many lovely floral tributes, further depicted the esteem in which he was held by all, were arranged around the casket. Dr. j. J. Bunting, District Superintendent, assisted by Rev. J. R. Bicking, pastor of the Immanuel Methodist church, Rev. W. C. Mumfred, of Mariners, Rev. Charles M. Elderdice, of Mount Pleasant and Rev. J. T. Rowlenson, of Asbury, officiated at the final rites. His body was interred at Sunnyridge Memorial Park. Members of Crisfield Lodge No. 1044, B. P. O. Elks, an organization with whom he had been affiliated for a number of years, were in charge of the services at the grave. Pall-bearers were James W. McLane, Sr., Isaac H. Dorsey, Fred N. Holland, Austin Loreman, William S. Quinn and R. Horace Ford. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Alida Sterling Dryden, one son, William Dryden, Jr. and a grandson, Thomas Dryden. One sister, Mrs. Vera Cox of New York and Crisfield, and two brothers, Oval Dryden, of this city, and Clarence Dryden, of New Orleans, La., also survive.
