At 3 o'clock he arose, but seeing it was early and raining he returned to bed leaving the lamp burning; and saying he would now lie on his left side and see if he couldn't sleep better, he apparently went to sleep. An hour later Mrs. Hayes became aware that something was wrong. She found him unconscious and black in the face as if choking. Charley was summoned from the next room, a physician was called, but all to no purpose; death had done his work. Mr. Hayes was a native of Kentucky, 73 years, 9 months and 8 days old; came to this country in 1865; brought and improved what is now known as the Otis farm; when Imogene was laid out he sold the farm and engaged in general merchandise; quitting this he bought another farm three miles northeast of town. Selling this, he again came to town and went into the furniture business, in which he remained until about a year ago he sold the business to his son, Chas. W. He has been a familiar figure in Imogene since its earliest day; a quiet, honest, straight man, everybody liked Uncle Billy Hayes; and his death has caused universal sorrow. A Methodist since 1858, it was met that the obsequies should be in that church. Rev. Carpenter, his pastor, conducted the services at 3 o'clock Sunday, and it is said it was the largest funeral assembly ever known in the city; the cortege reached from the church to the grave and not near all were in line. Mr. H. had been twice married, and leaves a wife and ten children living. All the children were present except two that did not get the telegram in time. Five live in this vicinity. Mrs. Jas. Phelps, a daughter, came from Utica, Neb.; John Hayes and wife from Tarkio, Mo., and these brought with them a daughter and her child, a great great granddaughter to Mr. Hayes.
