Had he lived to Christmas day he wo'd (sic) have been 74 years of age. His native place was Carroll county, Ohio. He came to this county when a youth, and has resided here ever since. In 1846 he was married to Miss Margaret Nelson, a most excellent help-meet and companion, who died in 1878. To them were born seven sons and three daughters--all but two of whom survive, (sic) As a citizen and neighbor Mr. Hootman was quiet, inoffensive, and always ready to oblige.... He leaves perhaps, not a single enemy. As a husband and father he was a model, very affectionate and considerate of the wants and needs of others. Socially (sic), he was full of life and en (at this point of the obituary on the left side is gone, making the first word or so of each line missing) the society of his friends. He (was a?) a member of the U. P. church (he joined as?) a young man, and in the home, (?) (fa?)mily religion, in the observance (of the) Sabbath, and in attendance (?) the church ordinances he was a (?)ful servant of the Master. He (was a?) man of powerful physical condition, but strong as wekk as (the) weak must at last yield. His (?) is done and we have good reason (to be)lieve has gone to his Reward. (May) his mantle rest on those he leaves (behin)d.
