Barger of Vine street on the morning of July 4th., was rather sudden as it was thought he had partially recovered from his attack of heart disease of a few weeks before. He appeared to be improving slowly until a few days before his death, when he had an apparent relapse but was not considered dangerous. His funeral was largely attended by friends and relatives on Saturday morning last and was conducted under the charge of the Grand Army Post of this place. INDEPENDENT REGISTER [Columbiana, OH] Volume XX #15 Page 3 Thursday - July 11, 1889 Obituary for William Howard Barger Wm. H. Barger, of this place, whose health had been running down for several years past, died on the 4th inst. An autopsy held by Dr. Hayden, his attending physician, revealed the fact that the immediate cause of death was a great enlargement of the liver. This organ had crowded the diaphragm up three inches above its natural position. There was also an enlargement of the heart, which, as well as the lungs, was also crowded by the enlargement of the liver. Mr. Barger was a member of Co. H, 115th O.V.I., enlisting in August, 1862, and being mustered out in July, 1865. He was a member of James A. Garfield Post, G.A.R., of this place. His age was 49 years, 10 months and 2 days. He leaves a wife and five children. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Bomberger, were held at Grace Church Saturday forenoon. Quite a number of his comrades in arms were present. RESOLUTIONS IN MEMORY OF COMRADE WM. H. BARGER WHEREAS, In the great battle of life, another of our comrades has fallen a victim at the hands of that mighty foeman, Death, doubtless from the seeds of disease sown during his long service in the army, during the late war, therefore, be it. RESOLVED, By the members of James A. Garfield Post, No. 136, G.A.R., that in the death of Wm. H. Barger our Post has lost a zealous worker in the interest of the Grand Army of the Republic, the country has lost another of its devoted defenders during the late war, and society a good and useful citizen. RESOLVED, That we extend our heartfelt sympathy to his widow and orphaned children in their hour of afflication, and while we can not heal the bleeding wounds, we will ever be ready to dispense a comrade's charity in time of need. RESOLVED, That these resolutions be spread upon the rolls of memory, with the Adjutant of this Post, and that an engrossed copy of them be presented to the family of the deceased.
