Description	:	CLEARWATER, FL ~ Mr. William Howard "Bill" Goodman, 85, of Clearwater, Fla., died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, in Palm Harbor, Fla. He was born June 27, 1915, in Ashe County to the late Lee and Beulah Holeman Goodman. He moved to Florida from Mount Airy in 1983 and retired after 30 years with the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C., where as assistant secretary of communications he chaired an interagency committee to rewrite national policy on communications security and was a member of the U.S. delegation to SALT IV in Vienna. He was the co-author of several technical and operational... Read More	CLEARWATER, FL ~ Mr. William Howard "Bill" Goodman, 85, of Clearwater, Fla., died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, in Palm Harbor, Fla. He was born June 27, 1915, in Ashe County to the late Lee and Beulah Holeman Goodman. He moved to Florida from Mount Airy in 1983 and retired after 30 years with the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C., where as assistant secretary of communications he chaired an interagency committee to rewrite national policy on communications security and was a member of the U.S. delegation to SALT IV in Vienna. He was the co-author of several technical and operational manuals. He was an Army veteran of World War II and graduated from Appalachian State University in 1938. He was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church of Annandale, Va., and attended Harborside Christian Church of Safety Harbor, Fla. Survivors include his wife, Elsie Smith Goodman, of Clearwater; two daughters, Janice (Bunny) Vaughn of Tarpon Springs, Fla., and Barbara Koch of Santa Maria, Calif.; one son, William "Bill" Goodman of Collinstown, Stokes County, NC; one sister, Mary Jo Hoosier of Todd; one brother, Lowell Goodman of Memphis, Tenn.; and two grandsons. Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. Monday, Feb. 26, at Howell Funeral Chapel of Pilot Mountain, conducted by the Rev. Rickey Rogers. Interment will follow at Brown Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery, Westfield, with military honors by VFW Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today, Feb. 25, at Howell Funeral Home of Pilot Mountain.
