WILLIAM HOWARD KOESTER William Howard Koester, 78, of DuBois, Nebraska passed away November 17, 1996 of pancreatic cancer at the Pawnee Manor. He was born May 31, 1918 on the family farm northeast of DuBois. He was the only child of Emil C. and Louise Sophia Droge Koester. Howard attended elementary school at Avondale District #10 and graduated in the Class of 1936 from DuBois High School. He was a lifelong member of Friedens Church, being baptized on August 11, 1934. Howard and Alberta May Farwell, daughter of Albert C. and Velma Pelton Farwell, were united in marriage at the Friedens Church parsonage on April 25, 1942. They lived and farmed northeast of DuBois until 1973, when they moved into DuBois. Howard stayed active in the day to day operation of the farm until 1983, when he retired. He proudly served on the school board of Avondale School for many years, and was one of the4 initial board members of the Rural Water District of Pawnee County. He and Alberta celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 25, 1992 with an open house at Friedens Church. They were honored as Grand Marshalls of the DuBois Day parade on August 22, 1992. Howard was preceded in death by his father, in December 1977, and his mother, in January 1994. He is survived by his wife, Alberta; children, Carol Doolittle and husband, Lynn, of Roca, Nebraska; Joyce Gehrig and husband, Charles, of Salisbury, Missouri; Vaughn Koester and wife, Trish, of DuBois; and Wayne Koester and wife, Janis, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and ten grandchildren. Services were held Wednesday, November 20, 1996 at Friedens United Church of Christ in Bern, Kansas with the Reverend William Smart officiating. Pallbearers were David Korber, Dwaine Kanel, Terry Farwell, Scott Farwell, Gary Farwell, and Laverne Meier. Music was provided by William Hecht, soloist; Nanette Farwell, accompanist; and Jean Griffith, organist. Interment was in Friedens UCC Cemetery, Bern, Kansas.
