Just thought you would like a heads up. ******************** The Emporia Gazette, 05 Jun 1930 William Hammond, who was born in Yellow Springs, Ohio, January 6, 1846, came with his father's family to Lyon county in 1856, arriving June 3. The Hammonds came by railway to Cincinnati, by boat to Kansas City and by mule team across the prairie to Lyon county. His father, John Hammond, was a contractor, and after Emporia was founded in February of 1857, he built the first three houses in town. The first year William and Dan Hammond were the only children on the townsite, but although having no playmates they found plenty to do. William Hammond wanted to get into the big fighting in the Civil War, but he was a minor and his parents refused to let him enlist. So he ran away. He enlisted in Company C, 9th Indiana Cavalry, in 1864. He got into the big fighting the first thing in the Battle of Nashville, within 36 hours after enlistment. Mr. Hammond was married February 10, 1868, to Miss Margaret Fawcett, of Emporia. In 1904 they bought the old Captain Bruner place in the Rinker neighborhood, where they have since lived. The children are Perley Hammond, of Elwood; Almond Hammond, St. Joseph, Mo.; Mrs. Gertrude Roberts, St. Joseph; Mrs. Minnie Buck, Emporia, and Miss Lottie Hammond, Emporia. ******************** The Emporia Gazette, 21 Feb 1936, Friday WILLIAM HAMMOND DEAD--Pioneer and Civil War Veteran Dies This Afternoon in Newman Hospital William Hammond, 90-year-old Lyon county pioneer, who lived in the Rinker neighborhood and was one of the three remaining Civil war veterans in Lyon county, died this afternoon at 1:05 o'clock in the Newman Memorial County hospital. He had been sick about three weeks and had been in the hospital since a week ago Thursday. Mrs. Hammond died February 10 at the Hammond home. Funeral services for Mr. Hammond will be held Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the Roberts-Blue funeral chapel. Rev. Claude G. Large, pastor of the First Christian Church, will conduct the services. BORN JANUARY 6, 1946--William Hammond was born in Yellow Springs, Ohio, January 6, 1846. He came to Kansas with his mother, brothers and sisters, arriving in Lyon county June 3, 1857. His father, John Hammond, who was this town's first builder, and in whose honor Hammond Park was named, had come to Emporia the preceding April. The trip from Ohio was an interesting one for an 11-year-old boy and the others of the family. They traveled by train from Yellow Springs to Cincinnati, by steamboat from that place to Kansas City--Then Westport--and by ox wagon from Westport to Emporia. William Hammond was the last survivor of the 18 persons who made up the town's population after the Hammond family arrived. There was no water nearer Emporia than the Cottonwood river, a mile to the south, and William Hammond went twice with J. B. McElfresh to the river for water the first day he was on the town site, carrying the water in buckets. Soon John Hammond rigged up a "lizard"--a forked pole or tree with boards nailed across the fork on which a barrel rested--the town company furnished a horse and harness, and for a year, the young boy, Bill Hammond, hauled water at least once a day, and on washdays often made several trips. In the summer, the water barrel stood on the north side of the house, for coolness, in winter on the south side, for warmth. William Hammond's next job was in the office of the Kanzas News, the first edition of which was printed on June 6, 1857. That day four persons were employed in the office--Jacob Stotler, pressman, afterward editor and owner, Theodore W. French, typesetter, William Hammond and George Plumb, who helped him run the hand press and folded papers. Fifteen hundred of the almost 2,000 copies of the paper printed were sent to the Emporia Town Company, at Lawrence, which sent them to Eastern States to advertise Emporia and Kansas. LEAVES HOME TO GO TO WAR--William Hammond, 15 years old at the outbreak of the Civil war, was "rarin' to go," but his parents refused to allow him to enlist, and besides he was too young to come up to army age requirement. Toward the end of the war he decided it might end before he could enlist without the consent of his parents, if he stayed at home, so he left home, unannounced, and went to Indiana, where in 1864 he enlisted in Company C, 9th Indiana Cavalry. Within 36 hours after his enlistment, he was taking part in the Battle of Nashville. He was in the Department of the Gulf and saw service over much of Mississippi and Tennessee. He was a member of Post 55, Grand Army of the Republic, in Emporia, and the Grand Army conventions and campfires to him were delightful occasions. He was honored by election to the office of Junior vice commander, Department of Kansas, G.A.R., at the state convention held in Emporia in June 1934. He had served his own post in many capacities. William Hammond was married February 9, 1868, to Miss Margaret Fawcett, of Emporia, who had come to the state in 1863. They began housekeeping on the farm on which they lived almost all their lives together, having moved to the Bruner farm in 1904 and back to the present home in 1908. The Hammond house is the first house north of the Rinker bridge, on the west side of the road. Of the seven children born to Mr. and Mrs. Hammond five are living. They are Mrs. Mayes Buck, Emporia; Mrs. L. B. Roberts, St. Joseph, Mo.; Miss Lettie Hammond, of the home; Almond Hammond, Denver, Colo,; Perley W. Hammond, Elwood. There are 19 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. A son died in infancy and another about 20 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Hammond were members of the First Presbyterian Church. Mr. Hammond raised vegetables for market, and it was a matter of pride with him to bring to town the first roasting ears of the season. To many families he sold vegetables, eggs and fruit year after year for many years, hauling them in his spring wagon drawn by his old white horse. In later years he was unable to do heavy farming, and his grandson, Almond Hammond, Jr., who lives across the road from the home farm, did the farming. But as long as he could drive a horse, William Hammond brought his produce to town. A RELIABLE STORY TELLER--William Hammond was a never-failing source of early-day stories and if a Gazette reporter, combing the streets for news, ran across him on the street, he was good for one to half a dozen pioneer tales. His memory was accurate and his stories reliable, and he had lived in and through most of them. One story was that of Dr. Allen White, father of the Editor of the Gazette. William Hammond did chores for "Old Doc" White, who ran a general merchandise store in Emporia the winter of 1866. John Hammond, contractor, was at work the first building for the State Normal School, needed some finishing lumber from Leavenworth and sent his son and Tom Hall to Leavenworth after it. It was an aim of freighters to carry a load both ways, to make as much profit as possible on the trip. They got $1.50 per 100 pounds for freighting. W. T. Soden, the miller, had a load of flour to send to Leavenworth, and Frank Schmidling, the butcher, a load of hides. Dr. White, who didn't like the flour young Bill Soden was making--he said it was too dark, and he liked nice, white flour--told Tom Hall he had an order for him coming back from Leavenworth, and gave Hall an order on a Leavenworth store for two sacks, 100 pounds each, of the merchant's best flour. When the boys had loaded their lumber and were ready to start home, they drove to the store and gave the merchant Dr. White's order. The storekeeper brought out the flour, piled it on top of Hall's load of lumber, and Hall covered it carefully with blankets. The last night on the way home they camped on Dragoon Creek. While sitting idly by the fire William Hammond asked, "Tom, what brand of flour did you get for 'Old Doc' White?" "Don't know," said Hall, "didn't look, but I guess all right, as 'Old Doc's' order was for the best in the store." "Wouldn't it be a joke," mused young Hammond, "if that storekeeper had given you Soden's flour? Wouldn't 'Old Doc" cuss? He'd scalp you." Hammond's imaginings made Hall uneasy, so he said he'd take a look at the flour and sure enough, there it was, on the two 100-pound sacks, "Soden's Best." The boys laughed at the joke, but it was not altogether joke to Tom Hall, as he didn't see how he was going to face Dr. White with that flour. Hall considered returning to Leavenworth to get another brand of flour, but Hammond talked him out of that idea. Hall was greatly worried. Next day the boys drove into town and, fortunately when they reached Dr. White's house, he was not at home. They unloaded the flour and Tom Hall hit for home--the Halls were living at that time in the Lakeside neighborhood. Dr. White kept the flour. Many other stories of the old days were related frequently by William Hammond and last summer, during the water shortage, he told where the first and best wells on the town site were.
