He was raised on a farm and inured to a life of toll and hardships which developed a character of sturdy manhood and strict integrity. February 29, 1848, he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Throckmorton, also a native of Pennsylvania, and who preceded him to the better world only about two years ago, from their home in Madrid. To this union were born seven children. They are: John W. of Boone, now chairman of the board of county supervisors; Clayton C., who owns and operates a rice plantation at Crowley, La; Theodore H, a prosperous farmer of Colfax township; Lionel F. and Robert M., engaged in the mercantile business in Madrid; Wilbur H. and Emma, wife of Andrew Sutherland, also of Madrid. The children all have families of their own and all survive to mourn the loss of a kind and loving father. In April 1854, he removed with his family to Boone county, Iowa, and settled on a farm in Douglas township, about four miles north of Madrid, where with his growing family he suffered all the privations of the early pioneers but by genuine thrift and economy and strict adherence to business, he wrested from the then almost barren wilderness, a fine farm, and in time built up a beautiful home and acquired a substantial competence for his declining years. Father Keigley was known in those early days, to almost every settler in the county, and because of his kindness and forbearance and generous disposition, was loved and respected by all who knew him. In 1886, after his family had grown to manhood and woman hood and provided homes for themselves, he removed with his wife to Madrid where he resided until his death. He was engaged with his son, L.F. Keigley, for twelve years, in the general mercantile business, and here again his strict integrity and business principles assured him the respect and confidence of all, and the firm conducted a prosperous business. About four years ago, he disposed of his interest in the business to another son, R.M. Keigley, and retired from active life to enjoy a well-earned rest. Deceased had been in his usual good health until about six days before his death, when he was ceased with an attack of pneumonia and rapidly sank until his life was despaired of, and for the last two days death was expected hourly. He passed peacefully away surrounded by his family and friends. The funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 10:30 from the house and at 11 o'clock from the Christian church, conducted by the Rev. Golden of the First M.E. Church of Madrid, assisted by the pastor of the Garden Prairie church. The funeral was largely attended by old friends and neighbors of the family, the church being filled to overflowing, attesting the high esteem in which the deceased was held by everyone.
