Purdy William J. Purdy was born in Henry County, Illinois, May 2, 1875, and died at his home six miles north of Fontanelle on Wednesday, March 30th, 1921, at the age of 45 years, 10 months and 28 days. The immediate cause of his death was pneumonia, but an autopsy disclosed the fact that he was afflicted with an incurable blood disease and the liver was greatly enlarged. He had been sick for several weeks and although everything possible was done for his relief the complication of troubles was too much for his weakened constitution. When he was only six weeks old his parents moved to Adair County and he has lived here ever since, with the exception of one years spent in Oklahoma. On December 25th, 1897, he was married to Cynthia Lillie Moore and to them were given seven children: Otis, Gladys, Frank, Floyd, Maynard, Raymond and Arline. The third child, Frank died in 1918. Mr. Purdy was converted at the time of his marriage and has remained a faithful member of the church since that time. During the long time he has been a resident of the Highland neighborhood he has been an honored citizen and retained the confidence of many friends. In his home he was a kind husband and father. Those left to mourn his departure are Mrs. Purdy and the six children, two sisters Mrs. Josie Raper and Mrs. Ettie Harden, of Adair, and two brothers, Sherm and Charles, of Fontanelle. Funeral services were held at Highland Methodist church Friday afternoon at two o'clock and were conducted by the pastor, Rev. C.B. Guest. The body was laid to rest in the Prussia Center Cemetery. A large company of friends attended the services. Those who gave floral offerings as an expression of sympathy were: Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bakerink, Mr. and Mrs. E.M. Zook, F. Raper and family, Highland school and teacher, Miss Alice Hemphill and Mrs. I.P. Bailey, S.H. Purdy and family, Highland gospel team, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Brown, Mr. and Mrs. F. Purdy, Mr. and Mrs. G. Bakerink, Highland Aid Society, Ed. Hardin and family. Jay M. Moore, of Perry, Oklahoma, a brother of Mrs. Purdy, was here to attend the funeral.
