John Cox, the son of Hiram and Nancy Cox, was born in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, April 5, 1852, and departed this life September 15, 1942, at the age of 90 years, 5 months, and 10 days. He had three brothers and two sisters. Joseph L., Alexander R., Sarah E., Hiram Zenas, and Nancy Jane, whom all preceded him in death. He came to Iowa with his parents in the fall of 1865. John Cox, the son of Hiram and Nancy Cox, was born in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, April 5, 1852, and departed this life September 15, 1942, at the age of 90 years, 5 months, and 10 days. He had three brothers and two sisters. Joseph L., Alexander R., Sarah E., Hiram Zenas, and Nancy Jane, whom all preceded him in death. He came to Iowa with his parents in the fall of 1865. They came from Pennsylvania to Iowa with others in a covered wagon. His parents finally located in Sugar Creek Township, where he grew to manhood. He was united in marriage to Amanda Mahala McFarlin in 1876, and to this union were born five children, all of whom are living. They are: Harvey H. Cox, Montezuma; Mrs. Rosa White, Springville; Mrs. Essie Sheehy, New Sharon; Mrs. Verda Hilderbrand, Montezuma; and Joy L. Cox, Brooklyn, Iowa. He is also survived by twenty-three grandchildren and twenty-four great-grandchildren. His companion preceded him in death, January 6, 1940. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In the spring of 1882, Mr. Cox and his family moved to Nemaha County, Kansas, and then moved back to Iowa in the fall of 1885. In the spring of 1886, they moved to Red Willow County, Nebraska, and resided there until the fall of 1891. On the first day of November, that fall, he and his family started back to Iowa in a covered wagon. They then located on December 23, 1891, on a farm near Forest Home, where he has resided ever since. He was a jovial, free-hearted man and had a smile and pleasant word for everyone he met. He was quite active up until a short time before his death. He was very patient and considerate of other people before his death. As a child he was christened into the Presbyterian Church, which faith he continued to believe in throughout his life, but did not make a public confession or did not take any part throughout his latter part of life. Besides his immediate family and grandchildren, he leaves a host of friends and neighbors to mourn the loss of a pioneer father. Pallbearers were: Ray and John Hilderbrand, Archie and Elbert White, Marlin and Lawrence Sheehy.
