William "John" McCullough, 85, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, with his wife and family members at his side. John was born in Hobson, Mont., on May 4, 1924, the sixth of nine children of Arthur C. and Eva (Conquergood) McCullough. He attended school in Hobson before joining the U.S. Navy in 1942. John was very proud of his military service, serving aboard destroyers in both the Asian and European campaigns. After his discharge, he arrived in Klamath Falls to visit family. Here, he met, fell in love with and married "the girl next door," Bonnie Lee Sweeney, on June 24, 1949. They had three children, Lynn Marie, Janis Lee and Richard John. John worked at making deliveries for local creameries and bottle distributors before getting his real estate license. He then worked at several real estate companies before retiring in 1986. John liked to spend time outside looking for arrowheads, gardening, camping, hunting and especially fishing. He loved to fish rivers or streams and later bought a boat for ocean fishing. One of his hobbies was refurbishing bamboo fly rods, which he gave to family members and friends. John was always busy with tools. He built an addition to the first family home, helped his son and daughter-in-law build their home, and did remodeling and various projects for his wife and daughters. He enjoyed spending time with friends, whether it was hunting, bowling, dancing at the Elks Lodge or just sitting around with a drink and good jokes. He especially enjoyed his Patterson Street neighborhood and winters in Arizona. Family was important to John. He was always taking the family on a drive to "look at the country" or visit relatives. Visits to Montana, "over the hill" to Medford, San Francisco, the coast, Disneyland, Corning and Reno were frequent. In fact, his kids thought you had to go through Reno first to get anywhere. He was never in too big of hurry to stop and look at the sights. Later in life, he spent summers growing a vegetable garden, playing with his Yorkies, and visiting with family and friends who stopped by to visit. He especially loved his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; son, Richard and wife, Carol of Klamath Falls; daughter, Jan Nix and her husband, Jentry of Chowchilla, Calif.; daughter, Lynn Dwyer and her partner, Mike O'Connell of Klamath Falls; grandchildren, Ryan Thomson and Rebecca Thomson of Portland, Ore., Bonnie West and her husband, Jason of Rochester Hills, Mich., Kerrie Bunnell and her husband, Jerry of Klamath Falls, Neil McCullough of Corvallis, Ore., and Courtney Nix of Chowchilla; great-grandchildren, Jentry Lee Nix of Las Vegas, Nev., Trevor Nix of Benicia, Calif., Emylie and Kymberlie Bunnell of Klamath Falls and Brooke West of Rochester Hills. He is also survived by his sister, Margie Hodik of Lewiston, Mont., and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, two sisters and several good friends. Ward's Klamath Funeral Home, 541-882-4404, is in charge of the arrangements.
