Knott died Tuesday, after an illness of several weeks. The funeral services were held this afternoon at the M.E. church and the interment was in Masonic cemetery. The deceased was in his 82 year. He was one the the "1836" settlers in this county, and a good type of the pioneers who settled the Mississippi valley. In his later years he was a leading spirit in the Old Settlers association in this county. His memory of events in the early history of the county was remarkable, and he was considered an authority in such matters. A more extended obituary will be published next week. March 21, 1901 - Tipton Advertiser pg 5 - Obituary: William M. Knott was born at Richland, Ohio, March 11th, 1819 and died aged nearly 82 years. When 15 years of age, he moved to Indiana remaining there for one year, thence to Cedar County, Iowa, arriving here in November 1836. The journey covered a period of five weeks and was made by ox teams. Those were pioneer days, Indian bands were then seen coming over the prairie hunting the deer. The luxeries of the present, were then unknown. Journeys must be made on horseback, ox cart and lumber wagons; no upholstered coach, no fast trams were enjoyed. It was necessary to go long distances to mill. Mr. Knott hauled his grain 48 miles to mill. He was united in marriage with Elizabeth J. Allen on March 18th 1845 with whom he journeyed until 1884, when Mrs. Knott passed out of his. To this union there was given ten children, eight of whom are still living and are present at these services. Mr. Knott was again married on April 22nd, 1889, to Mary Brownell who cared for him in his decline and death. He was esteemed by his fellow citizens, and was entrusted with the responsiblity of county offices several times. It is said that he was the oldest settler in the county, save one, and in regard to age when coming in to the county, he was the oldest. He was an oracle at the Old Settlers reunions which occasion he greatly enjoyed. He will be greatly missed from these gatherings as well as from the streets of this city which he was so familiar. Mr. Knott possessed a rugged constitution, he was erect in carriage, and considering his age, firm in step until quite recently. His sickness was of short duration. He had been so used to being about that was a hard thing for him to be helped to his home three weeks ago, and he continued to the house. He took to his bed on Saturday afternoon, and on Monday morning at 4:30 quietly passed away. The funeral services were held from the Methodist Church in this city on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. A large congregation being present in spite of bad weather, among them were many old settlers. The services were in charge of the paster Frank P Shaffer. He was laid away in the Masonic Cemetery.
