Clarke, were held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. E. Rose, in this city, Wednesday, Nov. 1st, after which the remains, followed by a large concourse of relatives and old friends, were laid to rest in the Montezuma cemetery. In 1838 Mr. Mace married Anna Peregoy, who preceded him to the other world, dying Sept 15, 1884. To this union eight children, three sons and five daughters, were born. The eldest daughter died in Ohio. Of the sons, Calvin died in Wisconsin, Charles in Montezuma. William enlisted in the army shortly after the outbreak of the civil war. He was taken sick and sent to a hospital in St. Louis; his father went to see him and brought him home, where he died a short time afterwards. Four daughters survive, Mrs. Harriet L. Syverson of Eldora, Mrs. Sarah Ferneau of Malcom, Mrs Rebecca Campbell, present address unknown, and Mrs. Susie Rose of this place. All except Mrs. Campbell were present at the funeral. The deceased was possessor of a wonderfully robust constitution, and never knew what sickness was until a few years ago when rheumatism, bro't on no doubt, by exposure to all kinds of weather, wracked the iron frame with torturing pains. Always a hard worker, he could not remain idle even when reduced to almost entire helplessness with rheumatism. He cultivated his garden the past summer when he could not stand on his feet but had to crawl on hands and knees. A rugged and uncompromising democrat, he took great pride in the fact that his first vote was cast for Andrew Jackson, whom he revered as one of the greatest men that ever lived. During the gold excitement he crossed the plains to California with an ox team, where he remained two years working in the mines. When he tho't he had obtained sufficient gold to give him a fair start in the world, he started for home, taking passage on a vessal. But bad luck followed. The vessel ran on a rock and went down, taking with her all his gold except what he had in his pocket. So when at last he reached his Ohio home he was no better off than when he started. The following winter he moved to Wisconsin, where he lived until the fall of 1859, when he came to Montezuma, where he had since lived, honored and respected by all who knew him.
