Alternate Name Notes Film Number M541 roll 23 Info from an email I recieved - Wm Martin Sayles was born at Poughkeepsie, New York, Nov. 10, 1839, died Nov. 6 1916, age 76 years, 11 months and 26 days. Moved from Poughkeepsie to Marietta, Ohio when but a child. From Marietta here in 1847 which makes him a resident of this place 69 years. Enlisted in the Civil war in 1861 3rd IA Cavalry under the banner of a united republic, which he honorably served 5 years from beginning to the close of the war. He was married Jan 27, 1867 to Sarah A Fouts, the 27th of Jan next is their 50th Anniversary. To this union 8 children were born. Polly L Sayles died in infancy, J H Sayles resides in Rosebud, New Mexico; Ella A Sayles, Ottumwa, Steven W., died in infancy; Hattie J Powers, Kansas City; Tom Sayles, Drakesville; W O Sayles, Ottumwa; Gertrude Bunten, Drakesville, Iowa. He became a member of the Christian church in 1869, of which he has been a devout member for these 47 years, being converted under the preaching of brother Sam Downing. He was an active member of the GAR also of the IOOF. His political affiliations were as staunch and stern and holy as were all of his dealings and convictions with his fellow men being a Republican that his party could feel proud of. The funeral was conducted by R A Karraker.
