Description	:	William M. Kreger, 76, of Atlantic, resident of Grant and vicinity for 49 years, died in the Atlantic Hospital October 22, where he had been a patient for six weeks. Death was due to complications. Mr. Kreger was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fredrick Kreger, born in Germany, April 30, 1854. He came to the U.S. with his father and an uncle in 1867. Kreger, 76, of Atlantic, resident of Grant and vicinity for 49 years, died in the Atlantic Hospital October 22, where he had been a patient for six weeks. Death was due to complications. Mr. Kreger was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fredrick Kreger, born in Germany, April 30, 1854. He came to the U.S. with his father and an uncle in 1867. On the way over he ws taken sick and was transferred to a hospital ship and held in quarantine at Ellis Island. His father paid for his care, left money for his fare to Iowa and came on west, settling at Muscatine. Time went on, but no word came from the boy. Search was instituted with no results until one day the father went to the minister of his church and appealed for aid. The minister had a friend, a preacher in New York, who agreed to help them, and the boy, William, was located on Ellis Island, where he had been put to work at gardening and other old jobs. Money was sent to bring him home, but it moved to be only enough for the fare to Davenport where the conductor put him off the train. He wandered about the streets for three days without anything to eat. Finally a hotel owner noticed the boy, questioned him, gave him supper and lodging and sent him to his father with a little money in his pocket. He grew to manhood at Muscatine and was married to Emma Watham in 1874, and in 1881, they moved to Grant onto the fam now owned by John Yes. The lumber for the house they built there was hauled across country from Lewis. Their nearest neighbors were Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Stinemates and Mrs. and Mrs. D. H. Gray. Mrs. Kreger died in 1905. Mrs. Stinemates and Mrs. Gray died earlier that same winter and a double funeral was held for them. Now, twenty-five years later, the three men, Mr. Kreger, Mrs. Stinemates, and Mr. Gray, long time friends, passed away in the same year. All are buried in the Grant Cemetery. Jne 2, 1908, Mr. Kreger was married to Della Kenworthy, at Grant and in 1919 they moved to Atlantic. Surviving besides the widow are a son, Fred Kreger of Colister, New Jersey; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Nichols of Minnesota, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. One son, William H. Kreger died in 1907. Mr. Kreger was a ember of the United Brethren Church formerly located at Grant. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2:30 at the Grant Methodist Church, preceded by a short service at the home at 1:30, conducted by Rev. W. H. Meredith of the Atlantic Methodist Church, assisted by the Rev. A. Breeling of the Grant Methodist Church. Villisca Review, Friday, October 31, 1930, page 4
