Description	:	He was the son of William Slay and Louisa Onins Slay, and grandson of John and Polly (Green)Slay. He prepared for college by William A. Reynolds (B.A. Wesleyan 1858) in Dover, Delaware, and entered Yale as a Sophomore in 1865, B.A. Yale, 1868. Mr. Slay taught in Chestertown, Md, from 1868-1869. There he also studied law there with his brother, John O. Slay (Yale '59) and was admitted to the bar in October 1871. He continued to practice law in Chestertown until his retirement around 1924. There he also studied law there with his brother, John O. Slay (Yale '59) and was admitted to the bar in October 1871. He continued to practice law in Chestertown until his retirement around 1924. Mr. Slay was elected State Senator in 1907, served as director and attorney of The People's Bank of Chestertown, and was a member of the board of visitors and governors of Washington College, Chestertown, from 1890 to 1912. He was elected State's Attorney for Kent county and served for four years. Mr. Slay was noted as the father of the Kent county road engineer law which revised the system of road maintenance in the county. On December 3, 1885 he was married to Augusta Eccleston Hynson in Chestertown. They had no children. His wife preceded him in death on March 25, 1926. He was survived by a sister, Miss Mary Slay. Thomas Slay and Mrs. Powell who lived outside of Wyoming, Delaware, were surviving cousins. Interment in Chester Cemetery with Dr. W. F. Corkran officiating. Noted discrepancies: Obituary in the Chestertown Transcript on October 27, 1928 reported he was born August 5, 1847 while the Bulletin of Yale reported it as August 5, 1846. 1900 US Census shows birth as Sept 1845. Using Yale DOB information as this was initially recorded closer to his birth & because 1870 US Census lists him as age 23 as of June 6, 1870. The Transcript reported he was admitted to the Kent bar in 1882.
