Four of his uncles were master mariners, Capt. William Boyd, Capt. George Boyd, Capt. Theodore Arey, and Capt. Frank Parker. At the age of 18 he went to work as a machinist apprentice at the Washington Iron Works, later noted as a manufacturer of marine diesel engines.
