Capps, son of James O. and Phoebe (Essley) Capps was born April 7, 1888 at Kirwin, Kansas and died September 16, 1968 at Alma, Nebraska, at the age of 80 years, 5 months and 9 days. On April 14, 1909, he was united in marriage to Nora Merrifield who preceded him in death on February 26, 1934. To this union four children were born. On January 1, 1940, he was united in marriage to Stella Wolfe. operated a barber shop for 42 years, located in the old town of Republican City, prior to the construction of the Harlan County Dam, then located in Alma until health forced him to retire. He has worked for the Omaha World Herald for the past thirteen years. He has made his home in Alma for the past 29 years. A brother and a sister preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Stella, two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Meeker of Peoria, Arizona, and Ehith Capps of Kirwin, Kansas; one son Gordon Dean Capps of Torrence, California; three daughters, Mrs. Onnie (Thelma) Ault of Alma. Mrs. Eva Lewis of Alma, and Mrs. Harold (Iva) Perkins of Stamford; seven grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Services were held in the Zulauf-Banta Chapel in Alma on Thursday, September 19, 1968, at 2 o'clock with the Reverend Charles H. Gates officiating. Soloist was Reverend Paul Johnson, accompanied by Mrs. Jack Hardin, organist. Bearers were William Hall, John Hogeland, Gilbert Coe, Bruce Metzger, Charles Blees and Leland Pyell. Burial was in the Alma Cemetery, Alma Nebraska. The Zulauf-Banta Funeral Services was in charge of arrangements.
