Chambers The 37th Battalion, Virginia Cavalry was organized in August 1862, as Dunn's Partisan Rangers. The battalion contained four companies and in November was changed to regular cavalry. It was assigned to W. E. Jones', McCausland's and W. L. Jackson's Brigade. During April, 1864, it totaled 300 effectives and by June had increased its strength to ten companies. It was involved in various operations in western Virginia and East Tennessee, and then saw action in the Shenandoah Valley. The unit disbanded in mid-April, 1865. Lieutenant Colonel Ambrose C. Dunn and Major J. R. Claiborne were in command. Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. Company A (Captains James R. Claiborne and George T. Williams) - many men were from Franklin, County, Va. The National Archives in Washington, DC Military Record of William Patrick Chambers on file. William P. Chambers enlisted on Feb. 1, 1863 as a Private in Co. A, 37th Battalion, Virginia Cavalry, Confederate States of America in Salem, Virginia. His Commanding Officer was Captain Claiborne. William was captured (Arrested) May 12, 1863 at Buchannan, Virginia and sent to Weston, West Virginia. He was transferred to prison at Wheeling, W.Va. On May 19,1863. He was described as: Age 36, Height 5ft 9 in , Dark Complexion, Light Hair, Occupation-Farmer. He was transferred to Camp Chase (near Columbus Ohio) May 21, 1863. He was transferred to Johnson Island in a bay just north of Sandusky Ohio on June 14, 1863. He was sent to Point Lookout, Maryland on Nov. 30, 1863 where he spent the remainder of his captivity. He was paroled Feb. 17, 1865 at Camp Lee near Richmond, Va. The War Between the States ended on Apr. 9, 1865.
