Johnston was born Dec. 1, 1890, near Birmingham, the son of William and Minnie Wiley Johnston. A farmer, she spent most of his life in the Birmingham area except for a few years on a farm near Eldon. He retired and moved back to Birmingham until failing health required him to enter the care center. He married Thelma Byers April 18, 1934, at Sigourney. He was a member of Birmingham Presbyterian Church, Van Buren County Historical Society and a former member of Birmingham Lions. Surviving are his wife, several nieces and nephews. Five brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
