Lewis, ripe with the honors which came of a long life of integrity, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sallie Ward, of Hamburg, March 5, 1902, at the old age of 98 years and 22 days. Lewis, ripe with the honors which came of a long life of integrity, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sallie Ward, of Hamburg, March 5, 1902, at the old age of 98 years and 22 days. Mr. Lewis was born in Connecticut, February 11, 1904. When a small child he moved to New York and from there to Ohio and then to New Jersey, where he was married to Sarah Ann Leek. To this union were born ten children, four are deceased, the remaining are Jerome of Boulder, Colorado, William of McCook, Nebraska, Sallie Ward of Hamburg, Iowa; Esther Pease of Augusta, Illinois; Nora Davis of Scottville, Kansas, and Catherine of Illinois. Minerva, the eldest, now deceased, was the mother of John Luce, of our city. Mr. Lewis came to Iowa in 1853, and his first wife having died, he was married to Mrs. Hannah Hayden in 1857. One son, Andrew was born to this union. Mrs. Hannah Lewis died in June 1897, and was buried in our cemetery and Andrew, their son died in April 1899 and his remains were laid by his mother’s side. Mrs. Lewis moved to Villisca in 1877. In a few years he purchased a farm just west of Villisca, which he and his sons farmed for a number of years. After the death of his son, Mr. Lewis made his home with Mr. Luce for a short time and then went to make his home with his daughter, Mrs. Ward, of Hamburg, where he remained until the time of his death. The funeral was conducted from the home of John Luce by Rev. Dudley last Friday. Those who attended the obsequies were William Lewis of McCook, Nebraska, Mr. and Mrs. Simpson Fanell, of Hamburg, Mr. and Mrs. William Kyle, of Red Oak.
