Description	:	William Riley Staton was born to Peter and Lucinda B (Dunagan) Staton on March 19, 1879 in Ogden, UT. He was the youngest of 13 children. He was the youngest of 13 children. By the spring of 1880, William's father, Peter had put the family in a covered wagon and made their way up from Ogden, UT. To Butte, MT. And by 1881, the Peter Staton family had come to the Deer Lodge Valley to homestead by Willow Creek several miles of what would become the city of Anaconda. William was able to read and write and worked hard on his father's farm. On February 3, 1900, William married Carrie Icephone Morgan Clergy in Anaconda, MT. They moved to the ranch to begin their family, by 1901 they were blessed with a son, Arron, and by 1902, a daughter, Doris Mae joined the family. But on June 6, 1903 tragedy struck the William Staton family. William, Carrie and the children were on the farm either working or visiting his oldest brother, Arron Grant. The family was going to a picnic and needed to cross the Milk River. While they were making the crossing, the boat they were in tipped over spilling everyone into the water. Carrie grabbed what she thought was one of children and made it to the shore. When she got to the bank, she looked at what she had grabbed. It was the picnic food that had been wrapped up for the trip. Carrie never got over the death of her two children. From what the bible page says, neither body was recovered. His father and brothers and their families farmed the land until about 1905 when the New Works of the smelter was built and began pouring out toxic gasses that caused the land around that part of the valley to be adversely affected. The land was unable to produce as much bounty as it had. Their family continued to grow with William Elmer being born in 1905 and Lewis being born in 1906. By 1909, William moved his family in to Anaconda to 406 East Third Street to work produce at 410 East Park. According to the 1910 Census report, William moved his family to the Duffy School District to work as a farm manager and Carrie worked as a cook. In 1909, Lewis joined the family in a nearby town of Two Dot, MT. His father, Peter, died on September 21, 1910 and either William and his family came back to take over running the farm or had moved back early. The family continued to grow with son, Peter Morgan, in 1914, and a daughter, Carrie, in 1921. Either way, William and Carrie continued farming until 1927 when they sold the farm and moved to Anaconda. In They set up house at 213 E Fourth Street which they rented for $35 a month. In 1930, William was working on the Anaconda smelter as an unloader. Soon they moved to a house that the owned on 402 Oak Street. On May 9, 1936, Anna turned on the light going down to the basement of the house. The spark caused a gas leak to explode and the house burned down. William moved his family to 408 Cedar Street where he lived until he passed away the next year on June 12, 1937. William worked on the farm with his father, Peter, but by 1909 he and Carrie with William E. and Lewis J were living in Anaconda at 406 East Third Street. William was working in produce at 410 East Park. In 1910, William, Carrie and the two boys found themselves living on a ranch in the Duffy School District. On May 11, 1910 Herbert "Olin" joined their family. He was born in a nearby town of Two Dot. William was a ranch manager and Carrie was the ranch cook. There were two farm hands and three sheep herders who worked for them. By September of 1910, they would find themselves back on the Willow Creek Ranch outside of Anaconda. William's father, Peter, after suffering for two years had died of cancer of the neck. William took over the ranch while his mother, Lucinda, lived on the ranch with them. On June 25, 1911, Margaret Staton arrived but sadly according to the family story, she was dropped by the doctor, who was drunk at the time, and died several days later from head injuries. The death certificate lists the cause as malnutrition. Peter Morgan was to join the family 3 years later. Originally Peter was named Edward but the name was crossed out and changed. In 1918 William registered for the draft for WWI with an address of PO Box 78, Anaconda, MT. so it would seem as if the family would have to come to town to get their mail. On his draft card he was described as a tall, slender man with light eye color…probably blue. Carrie Lucinda joined the family on December 12, 1921 Olin. Then on November 14, 1922, William's mother, Lucinda died. William and Carrie were still working the ranch, but by 1925, Lewis and Bill were working for the ACM Company. One May 27, 1923, they welcomed their youngest daughter, Anna. By 1927, William and Carrie sold the ranch and moved to Anaconda. In 1928, Lewis was working at the CH Branscombe as a floorman and Bill and Willian were working on "the Hill". William was a loader. The family's sale of the ranch and move to Anaconda was probably motivated by the effect that the toxic gases from the smoke of the smelter was having on their land. The first house they rented in Anaconda was located at 213 East Fourth Street for $35 a month. William had become a machinist at the foundry. The census listed that the family did not own a radio. By 1936 the family had bought a house on 402 Oak Street. William was a loader on the smelter. Bill, Lewis, and Olin had married, and their families were growing. William's health was not good. He had a lot of trouble with his hiatal hernia. On May 9, 1936, there was a fire in the Staton home when Anna was going down to the basement to get some canned goods for her mom and turned the light on which caused a spark. The gas leak in the basement ignited an explosion which caused the fire. Carrie was upstairs in bed recovering from rheumatic fever and by the time she was able to get to the stairs, the stairs were on fire causing her to burn her feet in her escape. The house was a duplex. People were at home in the other, and there was loss of life to either one or two people in that duplex. The Staton family moved to 408 Cedar. William continued working on the hill until May of 1937 when he retired. He died on June 12, 1937. After having surgery on his hiatal hernia, he had an embolus following a transfusion. He died at 4 in the afternoon. His body was taken from the funeral home to the 408 Oak Street home for a final goodbye. Then it was taken to the Methodist Episcopal church. He was buried in the plot with his parents on the Upper Hill Cemetery in Anaconda, MT.
