Sunday Will Rittenhouse passes (DIED) peacefully away 5 1/2 O'clock this morn. (Newspaper - Will Rittenhouse, age 62, born Nov 16, 1846) 21. Stay with Dorthy A. R. (Dorothy and Will Rittenhouse had 11 children.) (Notice the newspaper article states that Dorothy, Will's wife was to sick to attend her husbands funeral on the 22nd.) 22. Nice day Funeral 1 P.M. Burial Greenwood Cemetery. 1909 March 6. Dorthy & Tom R visit us. (Probably Tom Rittenhouse, the son of Will and Dorothy.) 1909 May 7. Dorthy starts North. Work on Privy for Cemetery. (Probably North to the Almeria area, Loup County, Nebraska - Nebraska Sandhills.) 1910 February 3 & 6. Young (check this family) 1910 December 6. Zero. Tom Rittenhouse & I go to Hastings. (Probably a son of Will and Dorothy Rittenhouse.) 1911 May 17. Dorthy R. comes from N.(orth, probably Loup Co. Nebr.) 22. Ma (Matilda Rittenhouse Talbert) & Dorthy go to Hastings. 30. Decoration day good turnout. 31. Dorthy leaves on 11 (o'clock train) for home. (Dorothy probably came down for Decoration Day since her husband and other relatives are buried at Greenwood/Trumbull.) 1912 January 19. Hadlys (Talbert) and Berts (Talbert) visit us & Jes Rittenhouse. (Nephew Jesse Rittenhouse must have been staying with Harrison and Matilda.) 20. Jesse R. helps with chores. 1912 March 31. Jesse Rittenhouse came in evening. 1912 April 1. Frank (Smith) & Jess (Rittenhouse) finish husking corn. 2. Boys haul manure. (Frank and Jesse) 1912 June 29. Frank cuts wheat north of house. 91 (temp.). Jes cannot stand it to shock (wheat) Sick at stomach. 30. Jes fixing to go home tomorrow. 1913 January 11. Jesse R. stays here last night. 1913 February 24. Dorthy bargins for two lots $100.00 each. 1913 March 1. Bad blizzard by blowing Snow. 3. (Son-in-law) Frank (Smith) finishes loading his (railroad) car. Him, (daughter) Myrt, & Jes (Rittenhouse) stay all night with us. 4. Frank(s) & Jes (Rittenhouse) go off on frt (freight train). Dorthy (Rittenhouse) buys lots. 13. Dorthy R buys Bert (Talbert)s house. 1913 May 8. (Harrison B. Talbert and wife Matilda Rittenhouse Talbert) 4 A.M. leave Hast. (by train) for Haxtun Col. Arrive at latter place 5-15 P.M. & at Frank (& Myrt Talbert Smith)s for supper. 10. (Afternoon)P.M. help Frank with wire fence. Jes R. Leaves Franks before noon. 1913 June 7. 12 M (noon) arrive at Trum. Dorthy house a fir(e?) 1913 October 28. Send off Dorthys things. 1914 November 23. Dorthy R & Bessie Lundeberg of Loup Co. Neb. Come visit us. (Will and Dorothy had a daughter named Bessie and she married a Lumberg also sometime she married a Knight.) 1914 December 1. Dorthy & Bess leave for home. (Appears they stayed with Harrison and Matilda Talbert for about a week.) 1916 March 25. Cloudy & snowing, quite a blizzard, all day. Jes Rittenhouse & Mr (Frank) Majors come from Sand Hills. (The FRANK MAJORS family moved in the spring of 1916 to TRUMBULL from their homestead near West Union / Sargent, Nebraska. They had real estate dealings with Dorothy A. Rittenhouse, a widow, to trade their land and $1,000 for her Trumbull property. Majors moved to Trumbull because the sand hills lacked schools for their two children. --- Information from Trumbull C. H. 1986 pg 122.) 1916 May 24. Dorthy comes on 3-O-clock (train). (Dorothy probably came for a week stay and to be present for Memorial and Decoration Day. Remember her husband Will is buried at Trumbull along with other relatives. Also she may still have had land dealings to complete with Frank Majors.) 1916 July 15. Dorthy goes to Jims. (Is this her oldest son Jim Rittenhouse and where did he live? In Central Nebraska?) 16. Sunday Last night at midnight Sarah Wilson passes away. (She was from Shelby Co. Indiana as was the Rittenhouse family.) 23. Dorthy R. Stays with us. 1917 January 19. P.M. Fred Yocum & family (wife Alice a daughter of Will Rittenhouse) comes in Auto (from Nebraska Sandhhills) & stay all night. 20. Yocum & family leaves for home. 1917 May 2. Ma (Matilda Rittenhouse Talbert) has another another Stroke about 12 & passes away. About 12-25 & and now I am alone = no not alone, God is with me. 1917 June 15. Start for Sandhills. 16. Stay at Sargent (Nebraska). Eve go to Tom R.(ittenhouse) Stay at night. 17. Sunday Nice day Go to S.S. Picnic. Good turnout for Sandhill Picnic. 25 Auto pres(en)t. Held in (on) Nobby Grove. 18. Stay with Fred & Alice Yocum. Eve go to Will Dunbars. (Alice was a daughter of William and Dorothy Rittenhouse, as was Minnie, the wife of Will Dunbar.) 19. Will Dunbars. . visit T. Millers & Wills old place & Almeria (Nebr.). 20. Stay at Wills (Dunbars) another day, Harry R. visits us. Rains. (Harry R. would be Harrison Talbert Rittenhouse. Harry R. and Will D. are listed on the same 1910 census page, so they actually lived fairly close for the Nebraska Sandhills.) 21. Stay with Fred Yocum. Eat (noon) dinner with Tom & Dorothy (Rittenhouse). 2 P.M. start for Sargent. 22. Stay all night at Sargent. Leave 5-40, change cars St Paul for G(rand) Island, Leave 2-30 for Kearny, arrive 3-30, Leave for Stapleton 4-=30, arrive 8-P.M.. Nice except hot, 5 P.M. rains. 23. Stay at (Stapleton, Nebr.) Hotel with (daughter) Cora, nice day, & nice little Town. 25. Leave Stapleton on morning train for Calaway, leave here 3-P.M. for Broken Bow, about 30 mi rough road, a(rrive) 5-P.M. 26. Stay with Indiana Ash. (Mrs. Jesse Ash another Shelby Co. Indiana native.) 27. Leave 8-30, arrive at Seneca (Nebraska) Tod R. 11-A.M. (Tod R. probably is Todd Rittenhouse.) 28. In eve arrive at Bess Lumbergs Sterling Col. (Bess Rittenhouse Lumberg is Matilda and Harrison B. Talbert's niece.) 29. Leave Sterling 9-A.M. Arrive at Frank (& daughter Myrtle Talbert Smiths, Haxtun Colorado at) Noon. Lots of letters awaiting me. (End of diary) _________ _________ Raymona ________ told me that other information indicated that William's wife Dorothy was raised by a Talbert family. Also in later years Dorothy married a George Davis and it appears they lived in Sargent, Nebraska. At this time we don't know where Dorothy is buried. It appears as if Dorothy was raised in Shelby County, Indiana by Harrison B. Talbert and Hadley Talbert's parents Jesse and Hannah Talbert. In the 1860 census it lists Dorothy age 7 and Mary age 2 as being the daughters of Hannah age 54. (Who was Mary?) I think I would doubt that Hannah had children at the age of 47 and 52. I think we probably have found Dorothy Hill Rittenhouse, but listed as a Talbert. If this is true it is no wonder William and Dorothy Rittenhouse named a son Harrison Talbert Rittenhouse. Because William Rittenhouse was Mrs. Harrison B. Talberts brother and Harrison B. Talbert was Dorothy Rittenhouses stepbrother. During the 1880s etc. Harrison B. Talbert, brother Hadley Talbert and the Rittenhouse family all lived in the Trumbull, Nebraska area. ________ There is no tombstone for William Rittenhouse in the Greenwood Cemetery three miles west of Trumbull. For some reason portions of this family seemed to have moved / drifted between the Trumbull area and the Loup County Nebraska Sandhills. Their premanent address was the sandhills but especially Dorothy came back to the Trumbull area a lot. She owned lots and a house at Trumbull according to Harrison B.
