December 3, 1938, at the age of 62 years and 5 days. When two years old, in 1878 he came with his parents to Hall County, where the family resided until the year 1883 to respond to the call of the Sandhills. There in the unorganized territory that was later Blaine county, they haulted their covered wagon. The Rittenhouse homestead was located in the beautiful Edith Valley tucked among the Sandhills, that rolled into vast distances, east, west, north, south. Among their neighbors were those pioneers easily recalled by the few remaining from that period: The William Scott family, Charley E. VanNest and wife Sina; the Robbinaults, father and mother and two stalward sons; the Craigs, Welches; Mr. and Mrs. Fish and their two daughters Allie and Mary, others whom I may not mention. In the year 1892 the Rittenhouse family moved over the county line into Loup county. In this county Harry Rittenhouse has made his home, excepting a few years he spent in Wyoming "Homesteading". Harry, his most intimate friends called him "Coon", was of a highly social temperment. He and his violin, which he played skillfully, were always welcomed at the merry makings. Harry and his fiddle had a real place in the social scheme, driving dull care away, breaking the maddening monotomy of long cold winters, when the Hills were isolated from the busy world. December 14, 1898, Harry Rittenhouse and Ida M. Rogers, were united in marriage by County Judge A. B. Cooley. They were accompanied by the bride's brother and sister, George W. and Eliza J. Rogers. To this union - a union held sacred for forty years, broken only by death, nine children were born: Edward and Raymond of Taylor, Nebraska; Mrs. Bethel Wood of Miles City, Montana; Mrs. Lauretta Klink of Bassett, Nebraska; Clarence, Woodrow, Harry Lee, William and Francis of Almeria, Nebraska. These children and the faithfully loving wife Ida, today mourn the passing of husband and father. Its needs must be so. Be consoled by the thought that he rests from his labor and pain and illness. The pioneer father and mother of the deceased, have long since passed into another New Country. The oldest brother James has followed them. Brothers and sisters living and who are sad at the parting of the trail are: Mrs. Bessie Knight of Lake Villa, Illinois; Jesse Rittenhouse of Zion, Illinois; Ross Rittenhouse of Zion, Illinois; Mrs. Alice Yocum of Almeria, Nebr.; Thomas Rittenhouse of Taylor; Nebr; Todd Rittenhouse of Grand Island, Nebr; Mrs. Minnie Dunbar of Dry Valley Milburn postoffice. There are also many other relatives and a host of long-time friends, who bow in sorrowful submission to the Grim Reaper. The following poem was written by a pioneer friend Thurman A. Smith: A Pioneer, a friend, a loving mate, a father, Has passed from out our ken of time and place. The trail he chose unfalteringly to follow Was rugged, winding, laborfilled, a weary way. For him it now is ended, he rests- He has crossed the Great Divide. Always he loved the Sandhills and the North Loup River swiftly flowing. He was of them a part since years agone The trek he made in covered wagon, With father, mother brothers, all. And built the soddy home. We of the Hills, were a friendly folk. We loved our neighbor, and gladly Shared with him our crust, or more. Under the sheltering roof of our soddy The weary traveler seeking a place to stay Could spread his blanket on the floor and rest. Hospitality was the unwritten law-- A law not hard to keep--we loved to share The little or much we called our own. Some say the last frontier is conquored. Not so. Within our hills we live as in the days of old, The flame of brotherhood burns brightly. This pioneer, unafraid, undaunted by the unknown Awaited the come of the mystery Death. His past was a year-strung rosary, without a cross, Whose beads he told with eager joy, Again with tender sorrow, tear-dimmed eye, Reminisent of the days of long ago. Bravely he welcomed the Messenger Who came upon dark, silent wings, Bidding him make haste and pioneer Into another unknown land. We trust for him a truly glorious sunset A happy crossing of the Great Divide. Funeral service was conducted at the Almeria School House, Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The funeral sermon was delived by Rev. Wayne Cutshall, pastor of the Pleasant Valley Church of God. Burial was made in the Moulton cemetery. I have a copy of their Marriage License.
