Robert "Bob" Cherry, 75, of 2650 Country Club Parkway SE, potentate of El Kahir Shrine Temple in 1977, died Monday at St. Luke's Hospital following a short illness. A Cedar Rapids resident all his life, he was born Aug. 7, 1908, and married Fern Steffens in Chicago. He owned and operated Acme Super Service Station for 28 years and was then associated with Allen Motor Co. prior to retirement in 1978. He became a Master Mason in Crescent Lodge 25 AF & AM in 1943 and a member of El Kahir Shrine in 1944. He also was a member of the York Rite Bodies of Cedar Rapids, He had been recorder of El Kahir Temple since January 1978. Active in El Kahir for many years, he served as president of the directors staff, was a member of the board of directors of the Embassy Club and was on the Shrine board of trustees for five years. He also served as president of the Executive Council of Uniformed Units. He was he first El Kahir member to become president of the Shrine Directors Association of North America. He also served on that organization's board of governors and had been its director general. Mr. Cherry also was active in other organizations. He was district adviser of DeMolay, served as chairman of the local DeMolay advisory board, and served as Exalted Ruler of Elks Lodge 251. He was past director of Royal Order of Jesters Court 139 and a member of Rotary International. He attended Coe College, received a bachelor of science degree in commerce from the University of Iowa and was affiliated with Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, John R. of Clear Lake, Iowa; two sisters, Margaret Kehne and Maxine Miller, both of Cedar Rapids; and two grandchildren. Services: 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church by the Rev. Lloyd E. Brockmeyer. Entombment: Cedar Memorial Mausoleum. Masonic services will be conducted at 7 tonight at Turner Chapel East by Dr. Theodore G. Lilley; all Master Masons are asked to meet at the chapel by 6:45 p.m. Friends may call at the chapel from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until noon Thursday, at the church after 1 p.m. Thursday. The casket will be closed prior to services and not opened afterward. Memorial contributions may be made to Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children, in care of El Kahir Recorder's Office, 1233 Fifth St. SE, Cedar Rapids, 52401.
